i expect it is the sorkin dialogue. if nothing else, you have to breathe differently to get through a whole line than you breathe to get through a line of anything else -- which really does make it like singing, actually. so maybe what it is, is that the characters' voices are much more controlled than the actors'. i have it in my head that the same is true of richard schiff, but of course, his toby has the whole range of voices.
