that was the year that was - 2005

1. What did you do in 2005 that you'd never done before?

tended bar.  i've waited tables before, but it's cooler to be a bartender than a waitress.  also, ran in a student election!

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

i don't make New Years' resolutions.  i've thought for a while that it's better not to have written evidence of my eventual failure.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

not yet, but any day now!

4. Did anyone close to you die?

my father's aunt and uncle, within six months of each other.  also, we weren't close, but i was pretty upset by the death by suicide of E from curling.

5. What countries did you visit?

scotland, england, USA.

6. What would you like to have in 2006 that you lacked in 2005?

heh.  same thing i lacked in 2004.

7. What date from 2005 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

it's going to be whatever day my friend's baby ends up arriving.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

possibly giving a conference paper; possibly realizing that randomly bursting into tears from the thought of doing my work was, like, not okay, and actually gritting my teeth and calling the psych people.

9. What was your biggest failure?

my attention to my thesis, i think.

10.  Did you suffer illness or injury?

the usual allergies, compounded (the doctor says) with asthma; also, a solid day of a random bug or food poisoning or something really awful.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

baby presents!

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

justice sandra day o'connor, for sticking around until her replacement is confirmed.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

former FEMA director michael brown.

14. Where did most of your money go?

same place as last year -- rent and tuition, man.  (thanks for the tax dollars, by the way, y'all.)

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

being an auntie.  (are you sensing a theme?)

16. What song will always remind you of 2005?

i'm never really able to answer that question.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
I. happier or sadder?

about the same.

ii. thinner or fatter?

about the same.

iii. richer or poorer?

absolutely poorer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

studying and working on my thesis.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

slacking, man.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

in hong kong with my sister-in-law's family.  woohoo!

[there's never a number 21.  don't know why.]

22. Did you fall in love in 2005?

nope.

23. How many one-night stands?

one.

24. What was your favorite TV program?

all i had access to was the first four seasons of west wing.

25.  Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

i try not to hate people.  if i don't like them, they're not worth the energy (and the acid stomach) of hating them.  this, of course, has to do with people i know personally.  there are public figures who don't please me one bit, but i can't say i hate them because i don't know them or their motivations.  i can certainly hate what they do, though, and trust me, i do in many cases.

26. What was the best book you read?

... you know, i don't know?

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

myself!  i'm singing more this year, and with better groups, and i love it.

28. What did you want and get?

more opportunities to sing.  yay!

29. What did you want and not get?

a spot in Schola Cantorum.  also, the part i wanted in iolanthe.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

serenity.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

i don't think i did much of anything.  [livejournal.com profile] cannons_at_dawn took me to lunch?  and i went to the pub with my flatmates.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

i continue to puzzle at the presence of so many related questions.  isn't this one a lot like #6?

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2005?

is it clean?

34. What kept you sane?

who says i stayed sane?

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

um ...

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

the response to the hurricane.

37. Who did you miss?

my family, and the DCfolk and my other friends in the US.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

hmm.  perhaps i'll reserve my response to that for now.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2005.

there really are times when if you want something done right you have to do it yourself.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

i have run, i have crawled
i have scaled these city walls ...
but i still haven't found what i'm looking for.

(thanks for the tax dollars, by the way, y'all.)

Hey, no problem. :P

I think this was put together originally as a mishmash of more than one meme, which would explain the similarities between a bunch of the questions. Of course, I've been doing it too since 2004 in its present form because I am teh sheep, so *shrug*.

and YAY AUNTIE FOX! :D

this is the third time i've done it -- and i do recognize subtle differences in the questions, but especially me being me, "what did you want and not get" and "what would have made life better" and "did you fall in love" just feels like beating a dead horse, you know? ;-)
