fox: seeing red (wrath: my left eye is not normally red) (seeing red)
fox ([personal profile] fox) wrote2006-01-12 09:21 pm

surely it should be called "nag an ex-friend"

so, yeah, take a look at my userinfo for a second -- or, really, anyone's except your own.  up at the top, the new button between the "search this journal" magnifying glass and the "give gift" parcel, the button that looks like the LJ-user icon shooting a fountain of toothpaste or some other white substance toward the 'camera'?

"nudge a friend", that button is, and how it works is, if you and the person whose userinfo you're looking at are mutual LJ-friends, and you click the button at that person's userinfo, that person gets an e-mail that says "Hey [username], Your mutual friend [username] has noticed that you have not recently updated your journal on LiveJournal.  Be a friend and go post.  Sincerely, the LiveJournal team".

...

let me take this opportunity to assure you that you're right to suspect i would not react well if such an e-mail were to land in my box.  i'm not saying it would lead to summary de-flisting, but i'd probably say unpleasant things both to and about anyone who tried it, and more to the point, it would bug the shit out of me, and if you and i are friends, surely you do not wish to bug the shit out of me?  isn't that right up near the top of what it means to be a friend?

now, granted, i've been saying for years that 'friend' is a silly name for 'person whose journal i read' (and an even sillier name for 'person who reads my journal'), so, maybe we're LJ-friends but not, you know, friends, and you do want to bug the shit out of me.  who knows.  could happen.  if, however, you and i really are friends, and you notice that it's been a while since i've posted and i didn't say i was going anywhere net-less and in addition to missing my sparkling wit, boy-related angst, occasional fangirl behaviors about movies and TV and curling, and incomprehensible rambling about grad school, you find that you are concerned not to have heard from me because something may have happened, then, you know, send me an e-mail you wrote yourself.  or, better yet, call me!  or call someone you think may have heard from me.  just, for christ's sake, don't fucking auto-nag me with the push of a button.

thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rahalia_cat for the heads-up, and [livejournal.com profile] nardasarmy for details.

You don't know how much that makes me want to "nudge" you. I can't help it! I have the devil in me.

:>

i will say nasty things both to you and about you! [shakes little fists in the air]

*holds finger over "nudge" button and narrows eyes at you*

I'm not afraid of you and your puny fists of not-so-much-doom!

just, for christ's sake, don't fucking auto-nag me with the push of a button.

You've got a point there. I mean how hard is it to send a friend an email?

Although I do love how LJ is trying to make commmunicating all that much easier. I mean really they're really trying to keep us in touch no matter what.

[identity profile] darthfox.livejournal.com 2006-01-12 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
they're trying to get us to post no matter what. i mean, suppose i'd updated in a filtered post that some number of my mutual 'friends' couldn't see? RAR RAR RAR.

... god, that Nudge feature is something even I find a bit passive-aggressive.

[Hellooo, by the way!]

[identity profile] darthfox.livejournal.com 2006-01-12 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
hi! :-)

[identity profile] mearagrrl.livejournal.com 2006-01-12 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the only reason I could see using it would be for people who don't have an email listed on their userinfo, and for some reason I don't have an address for them (or know the one I have is little checked/obsolete), where the only other option would be to leave a comment on an old post saying "hey, you haven't posted in a while, you OK?". But...I'd probably do that, rather than "Nudge".

There are times when we're reminded LJ is mostly populated by teenagers, man.

[identity profile] darthfox.livejournal.com 2006-01-12 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
the thing is, my feeling is that people whose e-mail addresses i don't have, it's probably not much of my business one way or the other, you know? there's the friends/LJ-friends thing. but, yes, if i had to, i'd comment on an old post, rather than use the "nag" button.

[kills teenagers en masse]

Heh. Well, not that I would likely ever nag you (or "nag") you, but I don't have your phone number, and while I think I've got like, six email addresses for you in my address book, I have no idea which one is valid these days...but like I said, not likely to be nagging. And if I were, I'd leave a comment. But. Um. I'm not sure what my point was there, other than "i'm really bad at cleaning out my email address book when someone gives me a new address"?

[identity profile] mearagrrl.livejournal.com 2006-01-12 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
(OK, and why that comment was suddenly ANONYMOUS, I don't know...)

[identity profile] thyesc.livejournal.com 2006-01-12 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Fox, if I didn't fear you just a little bit, that button, it would be pushed. But alas, I have righteous fear in my heart and therefore, you may feel comforted that I will NEVER EVER push that little button.

Thanks,
Le Management of Chadley.

well, then, thank goodness i am fearsome. :-)

Would you push MINE, so I can see what it's like?

I won't push yours back. I swear.

I tried to push your button, but it only lets you do it to people who haven't updated in a week.

Not for nothing, but I think it's meant to be someone tapping the LJ guy on the shoulder.

I'm so there with you on the "annoying as all hell" aspect of it, though.

If I didn't see posts from you on a regular basis, I would be sad, and worried, but I couldn't imagine pushing a BUTTON with toothpasty stuff to be sent in your direction!

I would instead send an alert to the Underground Bunnies Of Stealth (UBOS) saying "What the F is up with our darthfox?" And, as you know, those of us who can tell you what color underwear Obi-Wan is currently wearing, will immediately tell ALL.

You haf no secrits. We Know All.
