my department has approved my staying for the DPhil, on the condition that i hand in a satisfactory performance on the MPhil exams (which is normal, to impose that condition).

not that i seriously thought there was a chance they wouldn't?  but, the thing wasn't signed and in my hand before, and now it is.

Brilliant! So how much longer does that mean in Oxford?

(and am reading The Brideshead Generation (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0395441420/qid=1137451108/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_0_1/026-0865315-7530837), much recommended. Would love your take on it.)

one more year after this one, assuming i don't irrevocably fuck up the MPhil -- after that i'll have discharged my fee-paying and residency responsibilities, so even assuming i don't finish the DPhil in one year (or three years, being MPhil+1) i won't have to live here anymore. not that i don't like it, but the east coast of the US is cheaper. :-)
