easter

This year, for the first time in my memory, the fact that it's Easter Sunday has a specific meaning for me.  Unfortunately (I suppose), that meaning is, thank god (which at least is appropriate, in its way), in another 48 hours local businesses will be back to operating on a normal schedule.  It's a pain in the ass wondering whether you should bother to pop out to the grocery store, for instance, because you don't remember if because it's Easter Weekend they're only open for a combined six hours over four days.  Not that there's a ton of convenience built in to anything around here anyway -- but at least on a normal Monday through Saturday the Sainsbury's two blocks away is open until 11 10:45 10:30.  (Bastards change the sign in their door by hand, based on the fact that practically nobody comes in in the last half-hour they're open -- which, to be fair, is true, and largely due to the fact that the place is pretty well picked clean by 6 in the evening.  But that doesn't help when you realize at 10:28 that you're out of milk.  And the changed hours are not reflected on the website, which makes the whole thing a little sketch.)  And!  I disagreed with someone about this a few weeks ago, but I have recently been vindicated:  except during Easter Weekend (and, one presumes, around Christmas, to say nothing of Bank Holidays), the Co-op just up the road in Jericho is open until midnight seven days a week.  Huzzah.
