The best thing, of course, would be to have People who do my stuff-toting for me.

Failing that, I've learned over the years exactly how much I can carry, and how far, when I'm grocery shopping and walking home with my purchases.  (Actually the exact maximum is a bit flexible depending on season, weather, terrain, and paper vs. plastic, but never mind.)  The trouble is that how much I can carry is generally a function of weight, rather than volume, so if I need to buy (for example) soda and milk on the same day, I'm not going to be able to get much else.  But when you've been locked in your room finishing your thesis for heaven only knows how long, the point where you run low on soda and milk coincides with the point when you run low on everything else in the world that is edible.

I was quite Clever to have thought of bringing my bookbag with me, empty, for soda-hauling purposes.  The fact that I was carrying it on my back, however, instead of on my fingers, did not make the soda less heavy.  Oy.

I've thought of it. I'd still have to get everything up the stairs, though. And there are cobblestones. And gravel. Wheeled suitcases are enough of a pain -- mainly, for super-big grocery runs, I order for delivery (which, I suppose, is a manner of having People to do it for me).

I'm actually done with the thesis now -- handed it in yesterday. Which is why I was able to go out and buy groceries (and a new pen!). But, oh my goodness, you are welcome to be the Care Package Lady when I'm (someday) working on my doctorate. ;-)

It's been amusing the number of people -- almost always immigrants -- who stop to tell me that it's really nifty, and that people back home use them.
