It's the ones who reallyreallyreally care about who wins, man. I'm looking at people I had previously considered rational, who are more worked up about the AI result than they were about, like, the last two general elections combined. Dayum.
They may be very talented -- I happened to be passing through when some friends of mine were watching the results show one week, and apparently they make the week's loser do a number before leaving, which seems unusually cruel, but the kid who was singing at the time was really pretty good -- but whether they are or aren't seems to be independent of their likelihood of success.
The mistake you made was in considering anyone on LJ rational. ;)
I have a (completely, admittedly irrational) hate for Taylor Hicks that knows no bounds, but I also don't give a damn enough to vote. Such is the life of an elf.

Some have frightened me from the beginning.

I don't watch the show, but the impression I had after watching snippets here and there: these contestants are marginally talented at best.
