finally!

Have made contact with the person at [potential employer], at long last. Set up interview. Sounds like a good gig -- it's a place I'd be more than happy to work -- but she volunteered the salary without my even asking, and used the words "set amount", and I tell you what, it's Not Even Close To Enough. I can make allowances for the fact that in a non-profit I'd make less than I'd like, but this is close to 10K less than that. (This is not me getting grabby. I have non-negotiable bills to pay. Student loans! Rent! Insurance! ack.)

Just tell the feds that you'd really like to pay back your newly consolidated student loans, but due to matters beyond your control, you simply can't.

And if the 60 Minutes hatchet job on Sallie Mae is accurate, the Feds should happily accept your request. ;-)

A set amount for a salary? Do they work with the government?

It's not a government agency; odds are they really can't afford to pay more, so if I tried to negotiate they'd cut me loose. Trouble is I can't afford to work for so little -- and neither can anyone else, evidently, because this thing has been listed since the beginning of July, and they must have had at least one qualified person come through their office since then.
