me:

Dear [hiring person] --

Good morning!  Sorry to disturb -- I hope it's not terribly tacky of me to ask, but I wonder if you know if there's an ETA on a decision about the [position] I saw you about on 6 December?  I was hoping I'd hear back with a yea or nay by the 22nd; but then I know you were all off last week, and this week between the holiday on Monday and the day of mourning for President Ford on Tuesday, you've probably barely managed to get back into the swing of things -- so in work terms, the 22nd of December was more or less yesterday.  In job-seeker terms, though, if I need to keep looking, the sooner I begin the better.  (But I live in hope!)

I hope your holidays were restful and everything you wished them to be --

regards
[me]

response:

Hi [Fox],

I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you; things took a little longer than expected.

I would like to offer you the [position] at the starting salary of $[salary] per annum. Please let me know whether you will accept, and when you can start, and I will get an official offer letter and contract to you.

Best wishes,
[new boss!]

so I said:

Hi [boss]:

Oh, thank god.  :-)  Yes, of course I'll accept the position, and I'm sorry to have pestered, but I'm so relieved I'm glad I decided to do it.  I can start as soon as Monday if you want me; if that's too soon, please let me know when is good for you.

Thanks!

OMG paying the bills.  Honestly, thank god.

It really is a gorgeous bit of serendipity, isn't it? I'm delighted for you and hope it'll be the perfect job for you right now. And seriously, it is the benefit package that doesn't. freaking. QUIT. so that is so completely worth something. And I totally want to know who the boss in question was, and what projects you're going to be on and and and and. :D You still have my mobile number, yes? So feel free to call me tomorrow if you need more squee.

So, not a through road, but who needs to go straight through when the detours are so interesting?
