OMG y'all i am winning this weekend.
Dudes. I seriously cannot tell you how pleased I am with the past couple of days. Let's try, though, shall we?
Yesterday was relatively important at work, because there was a bunch of stuff I had to finish before I'm out all week next week. I had to make some copies of some stuff, teach a graduate student how to finish the document that's going to go with the copies but can't be finished until next week, make some changes in an ongoing report, FedEx some instruments to be distributed to our subjects, and generally keep the analysis of one part of the study from catching on fire. And I did all this! Admittedly, I forgot about the changes to the report until about 3:30, so
ellen_fremedon made the copies for me while I dealt with that. Yay for Ellen. But, by the time I left work I had done everything I'd intended to do before going away. Plus, I called my parents and got all the information I needed to begin transferring the assets they've been holding for me from their names into mine (but, in the case of my retirement accounts, just getting the records changed to reflect my "new" address), and opened an ING Direct savings account to link to my checking account so money I don't need to spend right away can actually earn some interest. PLUS plus, I began the dealing-with-the-car phase of the summer.
You all saw how my Thursday evening went. So. I called and left a message for my insurance agent, and then stopped fretting about the Fucking Lexus and returned to fretting about My Poor Volkswagen. I can't get a new front plate without renewing the registration; I can't renew the registration without getting the safety and emissions inspection; and I can't pass the safety inspection until I replace the windshield. Sigh. What I decide to do is this: I'll make an appointment to have the windshield replaced (6 August, the Monday I get back), and in the meantime I'll get a safety inspection done -- I know I'll fail, but this way I can see what the hell else needs fixing, because once the windshield is replaced I want to be able to renew the registration and no more damned surprises. So I call the station at the bottom of my hill and see if I can get the inspection done when I get home from work, but it turns out they stop taking cars when they have enough people in the queue to get them to 6pm. Plan to do it in the morning, then.
And then! I went to Ann Taylor Loft to get my 10% back on the Fabulous Dress for my friend's wedding -- where the lovely staff didn't make me go through the rigmarole of returning the thing on my Visa and repurchasing it on my store credit card, but instead just credited my Visa 10%, yay. Plus some stuff I'd ordered from online came yesterday, so now I have belts to hold my pants up and also a sparkly purple camisole and some other things. And
ellen_fremedon and
sanj came over and we watched some Fourth Doctor, but after 1 3/4 episodes I could not keep my eyes open anymore, and they were fading as well, so they went home and I went to bed.
Incredibly productive day huzzah. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE.
So this morning, I woke up and had a hotter-than-usual shower, and made some coffee and watched the last part of the episode I hadn't been able to finish last night. And then I went out with the following list of errands:Goodwill
curling club -- call first
ellen_fremedon &
sanj
datlowen
batteries & charger
4x5 frame
checks
socks While I was in line at the garage, I called
datlowen and texted
sanj; while the car was being inspected, I went to the post office and sent off my passport and a package I've been meaning to send for months. Afterward, I took some stuff to Goodwill that I've been meaning to take up there for months. :-) I called the club, where they said there were more than enough people for the jobs that needed doing so I was welcome to come up but there was no need -- but I did get them to add to the announcements that people should contact me about the Inaugural, since I have been suckered into chairing. I bought a new battery charger (my old one has never worked v. well), and confirmed that to get a 4x5 picture frame I'll have to order it. I deposited two checks, and went and bought socks, the original Star Wars trilogy on DVDs (I bought them separately so I could get the original releases, because see earlier this week re: rigid conservatism when it comes to canon), and some baby presents: a cute-but-not-offensively-so baby doll for the Big Sister, and a couple of bibs that say "amo a mi hermana mayor" for the new baby. (The old baby and I are both big sisters now, and we big sisters have to stick together.) And a couple of other things. But let me get back to the car.
The Virginia Safety Inspection Manual says:
The only thing I didn't do is buy 10mm knitting needles and a bunch of yarn, with which to make a scarf. Maybe I'll go out again for that this afternoon; maybe not.
And now I will pack my bags and wrap my presents and possibly even do some laundry. And internally, I will DANCE AND SING because this is the best weekend EVER.

The Virginia Safety Inspection Manual says:
Inspect for and reject if:Now, the crack in my windshield begins with a teensy star crack under the passenger-side wiper blade, from which proceeds a short crack (about 1/2") going down to the bottom edge; a longer crack, maybe five inches, off to the left but ending at the bottom edge; and a much longer crack going off to the right and then curving up at the corner and ending at the right-hand edge. Until it curves upward, no part of the crack is above the 3-inch line; after that, it obviously is, because it ends maybe a quarter of the way up the windshield from the bottom. The furthest the crack ever is from any edge of the windshield is maybe 3/4". So you tell me. Should my windshield fail inspection? According to the guy at the garage at the bottom of the hill a few weeks ago, yes. But according to the guy at the garage I went to today (across a couple of streets, because the queue there was shorter), no! Nothing about the crack weakens my windshield or obstructs my vision, so I have passed inspection and HURRAH! I shall cancel the glass-replacement appointment and simply do emissions and renewal next Monday, and yay! The only thing is that my old safety inspection was good through 8/07, and the new one is through 7/08 instead of 8/08. [makes a face] But July 31, 2008 is a Thursday, so maybe I'll let it run all the way out and get it done again on August 1. Because the registration will be good through August '08, since I won't be getting it until next week. In short: WIN! (Hence the Star Wars, as a reward and celebration of not having to spend $250 on a new windshield.)
7. There is a pit, chip, or star crack larger than 1 1/2 inches in diameter at any location in the windshield above the 3-inch line at the bottom.
8. At any location in the windshield above the 3-inch line at the bottom there is more than one crack from the same point if at least one of the cracks is more than 1 1/2 inches in length. There is any crack that weakens the windshield so that one piece may be moved in relation to the other. (If there is more than one crack running from a star crack that extends above the 3-inch line, the windshield shall be rejected.)

I'm chewing my nails over the current state of my windshield, which is the worst windshield I've ever seen on a car. But I was quoted $400 to replace it. meep.
