Re: temporal deixis and other matters

"This Saturday" and "two weeks from yesterday" are not the same day. And even supposing that a paint scuff will cost $1100 to fix -- a point I am by no means willing to accept without discussion -- it shouldn't take four days and require a rental car. Count on my insurance sticking up for me, you spoiled goddamn brat.

Similar crap happened to a friend (J). He told the spoiled rich boy with the infinitesimal scratch on his bumper to send him an estimate.

SRB: The estimate is $450.
J: Um ... okay, send me a copy please.
SRB: I'm not sure what shop I'm going with.
J: When you decide, have them send me the bill.
SRB: I'd rather have the cash.
J: I'm sure you would, but no go.
SRB: I'll let you know.
[days pass]...
SRB: Where's my money?
J: Where's the estimate?
SRB: You'll be hearing from my lawyer.
SRB's lawyer: In addition to the $1100 damage to his car, my client and his friend both sustained whiplash and are suing for medical expenses, pain and suffering.
J: Fine. Sort it out with my insurance company's lawyers.
J's insurance company's lawyers: SRB and his friend are liars. We are sending him a grand total of $129.
J: [happy dance]

Other side of the coin

I'm sure I'll sound villanous, but whatever. When someone rear-ended my car and scratched/gouged the bumper, it cost about $1200 to fix and took two weeks to fix. And you're damned skippy I got a rental car. It wasn't my fault the person behind me was too ass-headed to pay attention, why should I have to be car-free?

If it really does take that long, then no, of course a person shouldn't be car-free. I'm disputing the likelihood that it will take that long. This was damage that was not visible to me when I looked to see (because I knew I'd made contact -- am not in fact ass-headed). She may be on the up and up, but so far it feels kind of hinky to me.
