oh dear.
So to go with my purple spangly dress (pictures of which I hope to be able to post someday; it's a thing to do with camera cables), what is really required are go-go boots. I might also look into some clunky mary janes and knee socks, but this isn't really that kind of dress. Anyway. I went google for go-go boots, and among the things I came up with was this. OMFG it comes in silver and besides the company -- which I've never heard of -- has a FAQ that makes me think they are probably reasonable and respectable and also my sort of people. But tragically, the information does not list a circumference for the boots. I've lost a fair amount of weight, but not from my calves, which are still about 17" at their widest point. (I've lost it from my thighs and my waist and my hips, so don't think for a moment that I'm complaining.) Any boot that doesn't specifically say it should fit larger calves will probably not fit me; these things tend to be made for skinny-legged girls. On the other hand, it's available up to size 14, and other styles on the website are available in sizes even bigger than that, so perhaps it caters to the drag-queen crowd? Aren't their legs (at least potentially) even musclier than mine?
You see my difficulty. I also found these. SILVER GLITTER OMG. But look what it says: 15", curse them! This site also has boots that look the same to me as the first ones, and they claim 14". And then there's this site, which calls itself "Queen Fashions" (and whether that means in the "drag" or "plus-size" sense is both unclear and beside the point), and which makes a point in some cases of noting that the damn things should fit larger calves -- but look, they don't say this for the ones that come in many colors, up at the top, but they do say it for the silver glitter boots in the middle of the fourth row. Which look just like the ones that are labeled elsewhere as accommodating up to 15" calves. Is that "larger"? I mean, I guess it's larger than something, but I know for sure I don't have the widest calves that ever wanted to wear knee boots. Sigh. And clicking on the images at the Queen place doesn't help; it just shows me the image all by itself.
So I e-mailed the Queen place and called the Pinup place. I got a very pleasant-sounding young man on the phone and asked him about the calf circumference of these boots, giving a good deal of information from the website, since there was no product number. He clicked some things and said let him look into it, because he couldn't find the information either. (I'm prepared to bet $5* that he looked at the same website I was looking at, but that's neither here nor there.) I wanted the calf ... what was it?
After another couple of minutes we worked out that he had only measured one side, or flattened the top of the boot and measured that, or something, and thus the circ was probably 12" or 13". But, dude. I don't expect everyone to have aced geometry or anything -- I certainly didn't -- but even if you don't know the word "circumference", shouldn't you be able to work out how to measure to see if a boot will fit a leg or not?

him: It looks like about six inches.[headdesk]
