this is not economically stimulating

So I live in Virginia and work in Maryland, right? And of course I filled out a W-4 when I took this job, and following the instructions on the form scrupulously, I noted that because I am not a Maryland resident I am exempt from having Maryland tax withheld. Seems reasonable, don't you think?

Yeah - what didn't occur to me until today was that they weren't going to automatically withhold Virginia tax just because they saw my Virginia address. Bottom line: federal refund + "stimulus" check = tax I owe the Commonwealth.

I'm filling in a new W-4 as we speak. Bleah. Ptui.

Ick, that is the suck.

Not quite as bad as when K lived in MD and worked in VA though. Despite her properly filling out her W-4, they withheld VA taxes. We didn't notice it till tax time came around. Had to file with VA for a refund, and had to pay huge penalties to MD for under-withholding. Her workplace refused to cover the penalties too, even though it was (mostly) their fault for not following the directions on the W-4.

Moral of the story - check your pay stubs regularly to make sure they are withholding properly!
