more on the non-suckage of academia
just went over to hand in the philosophy paper (woo-hoo!). was stopped in the hall on the way back by Pleasant Philosophy Boy, who i'm convinced doesn't actually know my name, but who's been trying to make me feel like part of the group for most of the semester. (it's a philosophy of language course, see, and there's all these grad students in philosophy who know one another and substitute-teach one another's courses and etc., and then here's me, the grad student in linguistics, and i know things about language that it never occurred to them even to wonder about, but in terms of philosophy, i've been sort of struggling to keep up. and it's not that the general crowd has been unfriendly, but PPB has made a particular effort, which i appreciate.) he's organized a study group to go over the potential questions for monday's final, but he didn't have my e-mail address, so he hadn't been able to ask me if i wanted to join. so, depending when it is, now i'm invited. maybe i'll make cupcakes for everyone. :-)
(okay, PPB is, in addition to being pleasant, also fine as hell. with the eyes and the smile and the shoulders and the hands and the scruffy facial hair. and v. smart, although he loses a couple of points for his PhD subject being philosophy. and also, taken. so in that respect, i guess it sort of does suck. but just a little.
