today in ow
The project for today was to remove the temporary partial, clear away the cement, and replace it with the fancy new porcelain partials that should look just like my original teeth. There was going to be some drill work (just sanding, really), and some air and cold water, and because the cracked places were still feeling sensitive, they decided they'd better hit me with some novocaine instead of just going forward without.
Looking back, it may not have been worth it. The novocaine acted slower than it ever has done in the past, last week included, so when they took out the temporary and started scraping away the residual cement I could feel it and it kind of hurt; so they gave me more novocaine, and that hurt, which they were surprised I could feel it at all, but I sure could. And then when they really got to work, the air and the water hurt like hell, and they were very sorry, but they had to keep going - I've never felt such pain in a dentist's chair before. But what can you do? They're there with a drill in your mouth, and it's not like the pain will immediately go away if they stop, but things will go very badly if you flinch too hard, so all you can do is sit there and tremble and cry quietly and try not to move your head. Although at one point when the assistant resumed with the water jet I couldn't help it, I reached up and pushed her hand away.
Came home a little before noon and took an unprecedented five advil and lay down with an ice pack for ten minutes and then a heating pad after that - I know the ice is better for making the swelling go down, but the heat is better for relaxing the tense muscles and speeding blood to the area so the healing can proceed and the numbing can go away. About an hour and a half later I woke up from a doze I guess I wouldn't have fallen into if I hadn't been feeling a little better. And only just now before 3pm the last of the novocaine has finally worn off. So I only feel as if I've been percussed upon with something blunt (and my mouth tastes like a Home Depot).
Better try eating something, I suppose. And hope this worked and I won't have to have the roots canaled after all, because oh my god.
