romeo and juliet
it's not that i ever hope to direct R&J, because it just makes me yawn. but if i ever do -- is there anything in the text that requires friar lawrence to be a father figure? couldn't he be a young guy like romeo and mercutio and the gang? is there any reason the whole mess can't be his fault because he's just not ready for the kind of responsibility he's required to handle?

I don't think it's the Friar's fault. He has an idiot (R) to counsel. It was gonna end badly no matter what.

anyway, on friar L -- i think i mean less that it is his fault (in the interpretation that's in my head now, i mean) than that he might see it that way. or not -- what i'm liking, though, is the idea of a young, green lawrence, one who's as invested in the whole thing as romeo and juliet are. normally he's played as about their parents' age, etc., etc. -- like the nextel commercial says, his attitude is basically "kids!" (but he helps them out anyway because he's a big softie). i'd like to have a lawrence who's not just disappointed or grieved by the tragic ending, but really crushed. shaken in his faith. thinking about leaving the order. that kind of thing.
(romeo and juliet: the tragedy of friar lawrence. it could work. [g])
