heh. my brother's fiancee graduated with honors, and my brother graduated magna. not that they didn't deserve it -- they did -- but the fact that they deserved it doesn't appear to be why they got it, in either case. they're the first to admit it. you apparently have to make a serious effort not to get honors at harvard. in the class day address mr. al franken said "those of you graduating with honors, congratulations. did some of the work, probably went to class a few times. excellent. and for those of you not graduating with honors ... wow." :-)
at georgetown, it was strictly by numbers. 3.5 was cum laude, 3.7 was magna, 3.9 was summa, end of discussion. so you knew it meant something. (to be scrupulously accurate: they knew it meant something. i crunched some figures the summer after my sophomore year and figured out it was mathematically impossible for me to graduate with a 3.5. and sure enough, i didn't.)
