Re:
wrt your original WWB icon: can i describe what i did in photoshop, and if you're using some other program you're smart enough to apply it to whatever options you have?
if you still have the thing saved in layers, work with the picture layer; use the "airbrush" tool and make your brush slightly larger than the height of the text in the text layer (my original images were about 300 px square, and my airbrush was soft round 65 px). airbrush the picture behind where the text is going to go, and then fade the airbrush to about 70%. switch to the "sharpen" tool, make the brush a little smaller (i used soft round 45 px), select the layer with the text on it, and make one pass over the text[1] with the sharpen tool. merge the layers. shrink to 100 px. with the airbrush behind it, the text ought to pop a lot better.
[1] this assumes, of course, that you've done a good job deleting the white space around the edges of the words. if you've done a crummy job, i'll lend you my gif. :-)
if you don't still have the thing saved in layers, you're screwed; i'll try to get my hooks into that crop of the chick flying and make you a new one tonight. [g]
