Hee. Several months ago, in a thread in
sga_flashfic that evidently no longer exists,
betsanne used this icon, and I adored it and asked if I could modify it for my own purposes. And she said Hey, I didn't make it, and I don't remember where I got it from, so knock yourself out. So, finally, I did! [giggle]
more washington post fun time
Jan. 30th, 2006 10:18 pmyesterday's ombudsman column included a bit where a reader wrote in to say it's Just Wrong that the post doesn't customarily transliterate the 'al' (or 'el') part of Arabic surnames -- and she brought it to the attention of the news division and they're revisiting the issue and making some changes. go, reader!
so i wrote to her about the general problem i've been having with photo captions for several months. i mean, facts are facts, aren't they?, and relating them wrong is relating them wrong, whether the text is an article or accompanying a photograph. wales isn't in england, rachel weisz wasn't in the english patient, and there's no such goddamn thing as a 'parashooter'. if you can't get the ombudsman on your side with the idea that it's important for a well-respected newspaper not to look illiterate, then whom can you get on your side?
... in any event, that felt good, too. :-)
also, GIP.

so i was taking a break avoiding my work. (it's getting dangerous, the avoidance. i hate myself.) and
pearl_o had screencaps from the vault. and look at the look on frannie's face! and i don't have copperplate gothic, and even the similar fonts the 'free' font sites showed me wanted money, so i used the demo and took a screencap instead (or else the text would be clearer). and i found a workaround for the fact that when you do that you can't get the drop shadow, because after all it's not a text layer (invert, repaste, 60% opacity, w00t!). and then i was inappropriately influenced by
lunulet's abiding hatred of borderless icons; i'd never noticed one way or the other, before she brought it up, and now i'm becoming all touchy on the subject. (but i do continue to believe there are icons that are better without them. so there.)
this is me, checking off a box next to another Deadly Sin.
i've got already Envy (green) and Wrath (red); and this is (obviously) Pride (violet). this here site tells me that the remaining sins' colors are light blue (Sloth), orange (Gluttony), blue (Lust), and yellow (Greed). aside from the fact that (a) none of these seems familiar to me in a green-with-envy sort of way (even purple for Pride is kind of a reach, innit?) and (b) i already have an icon where i've photoshopped my left eye blue (i could use the same art with a different caption if i decided to do a Lust one with a blue eye), i've never really been clear on the difference between Greed and Gluttony. anyone?

singing yay!
Nov. 19th, 2004 03:38 pmso i met the choir lady and sang a bit, and she was glad i had contacted her! if i'd asked to join her alto section, she said, she'd have had to turn me away, or if i'd said i wanted to sing soprano, but i'd never really sung much in a choir before, she'd have suggested i wait until next term -- but with the christmas carol services and whatnot coming up, the fact that i chose to phrase my initial e-mail "i hear through the musical grapevine that you might have room for a high soprano with some training and experience" was a good thing. :-)
warm-ups, she said it sounded like where she stopped the warmup was just getting into the middle of my voice. i could certainly hear a difference -- chapel acoustics are good for that -- between the beginning of the warmup, maybe around middle C, and the end, probably about F sharp or so, in the actual quality of the sound. there's a place around treble C-ish that things suddenly open up and sound much clearer, and choir lady is delighted to have a soprano who's not afraid to sing "so high" as the G above that. (note: i have never actually considered this note high.)
[bounce]
i continue to be in need of a music or a singing icon. anyone have nifty ones to offer?

well, no one can call it a martyr's death
Nov. 11th, 2004 12:04 pmyasser arafat is dead.
i've got no real thoughts on that at the moment.
also: non-G IP. hug a veteran today.

lysrouge! huzzah!
(they hunt foxes here, of course. i pass by a sign on my way to class that says -- i forget what the first line says, and the second line is "KEEP HUNTING." it's a bumper sticker in someone's living room window. but i think i'm not the sort of fox that they like to set dogs on and then tear off the ears and paint their chins with the blood. i think that's some other kind of fox.)
there are fireworks going off outside. i can see them a little bit through the trees. i'm not sure why. bonfire night isn't for another couple of weeks. are these maybe "GO RED SOX" type fireworks?

lysrouge. it seemed to fit my sense of civic responsibility from far away, if you know what i mean. (i did vote, five days ago. there is no chance the receipt of my ballot by the county board of elections will not be timely.)

i retired the lego icon, because i seem to remember nobody was a big fan of it and a couple of you said it was so unlike me (despite the coffee and cigarette) that you didn't know why i kept it at all. have rotated this one in, instead. i like it better than the cartoon avatar, though i did manage to flip the ears on that one so the earrings go in the right places. :-)
t minus seven days and counting
Sep. 1st, 2004 11:00 ami have four more work days after today. i'm trying to feel sorry, and i can't do it. :-)
also, i sincerely recommend that anyone who needs a little confidence boost have a chat with
cmshaw. i believe i've rhapsodized about the wonder that is C on previous occasions, but i'm going to do it again. i don't know how she does it, but the girl manages to tell you what you want to hear in such a way that (a) it doesn't feel like she's just telling you what you want to hear, because (b) it sounds so totally reasonable, you start to wonder why you'd ever doubted it in the first place.
speaking of which: GIP.

two things:
1.
darthrami, i'd still be eternally grateful if you managed to get me a grab of blair threatening kincaid with that flare gun or whatever the hell it was.
2. to be fair, i think blair and hermione are really more nerds than geeks. but this may be a hair that only nerds (and geeks) bother to split ...
