confessions of a loopy fangirl

I don't normally use the word "fangirl" self-referentially, because it's normally not (IMO) accurate, but this weekend I crossed the line.

Okay, I leapt across the line.

Actually, what I did was drive across the line at about 85 mph.

Had my parents not been in town, I would have driven up to DC on Friday evening and spent the whole weekend with folks I haven't seen since I moved, and among our activities would have been at least one viewing of Men With Brooms. (There may have been plural viewings, because as it turns out, my good friends went on Friday night, and then the curling club went on Saturday, so who knows? But I digress.) As it was, my parents were in town, and didn't leave until Sunday afternoon. And then Sunday at about 7:00 it occurred to me that I could make it to DC in time for the 10:25 show -- and then turn around and come back here, since I have a class at 10:00 Monday morning.

Yes: I drove 240 miles, round trip, in one evening, to see this movie.

That ain't right. In my defense, however, three things are true:

-- I have both a red-blooded-female-oblique-stroke-happy-slasher reason and a curler reason to have done so. The curling was awesome.

-- I was feeling lonely anyway, because I'm at that phase where I'm settled enough into the new routine that I'm starting to notice that I miss my friends.

-- I made it to class on time this morning, in spite of the fact that I tore the belly pan (or something) off the car going over a bump on the way back and waited for AAA for two hours to tell me I hadn't shredded the oil pan and it was safe to drive the remaining 40 miles back home, with the result that I didn't actually go to bed until 5:00.

Now, about the movie (which, as it turned out, Ramius and I saw all by ourselves -- it was like watching TV in the living room, only bigger [g]).

They had six sheets in that arena. That's awesome. Most of the curling looked pretty good -- the burning rock was cool, of course, but the game play was mostly also right on. There was one moment where someone threw a rock -- I believe it was Mr. Leslie Nielsen -- and I (and, Rami tells me, all the curlers, when they were there) sat up and went "wrong handle!" That stone, thrown the way he threw it, no way it would have gone where it was supposed to. Apparently it didn't get fixed in editing, although in a scene just a moment later, there's a woman whose sweatshirt is printed backwards -- did someone flip the wrong scene before printing the reel? :-D Mr. Paul Gross looked good, too. Well, duh. I was a little (okay, a lot) thrown off by the greenness of those blue eyes and I didn't care for the blue and white sweater, but otherwise I had no complaints. :-D

Two weeks until the curling pre-season. Want to get back on the ice. Can't wait.

I'll ask some people what they know about curling opportunities in Hotlanta. :-) (Or, you should come to DC. [g])

And it's not just upper body. This sport works muscle groups I'd forgotten I had.

Please! If you find out about curling in Atlanta, please let us know!

There is (supposedly) an amateur curling league in Atlanta but I can find NO info on it! Argh!

And was the movie not great! Loved it! Wanna go again!
