1.  mail call

i've been gone a while, so the post has stacked up.  my new year's cards have yet to be sent -- they'll be new term's cards, i guess [g] -- but waiting for me when i returned were cards of various greetings from [livejournal.com profile] darthrami and [livejournal.com profile] strange_selkie, [livejournal.com profile] merrycontrary, [livejournal.com profile] lunulet, [livejournal.com profile] lysrouge, [livejournal.com profile] mrshamill and family, and -- the (frankly) best of the lot, and a huge surprise, a note from [livejournal.com profile] the_emu enclosed with a mix CD she's entitled "room on my horse for two: an album of slashy and australian music", none of which i've heard of before.  (okay, i've heard of "my heart will go on", but this is not celine, thanks be to jaysus, and i don't know this version.)  i'm going to give it a listen the minute i'm conscious.

2.  sense of smell

i can remember telling my parents, on the phone one time upon returning to my room in edinburgh after being away (either christmas or easter break, i guess) that the place smelled familiar when i got back to it, which was good and comforting.  the same is true now.  i got off the bus on the high street and it was sort of startling how familiar the city felt, given that i've actually only been here a couple of months -- not just familiar like i'm not new here anymore, but familiar like i was away visiting and have now come back where i belong.  and i don't mean "belong" in a maudlin This Is Where I'm Supposed To Be sort of way, because see above, couple of months, etc. (and besides, i have DC for that), but "belong" in a This Is Where I Live Now sort of way.  but that was nothing compared to opening the door to my room and it smelled like it's supposed to smell.  it's a combination of my lotion and whatever they clean the carpets with, i think.  i don't know.  but whatever it is, it pleases me.

3. that movie meme

1. Pick one dozen movies that are ones that you have special feelings about.
2. Pick a few lines of dialogue that mean something to you.
3. As people guess the film, strike out that entry.
4. If possible, after the film is guessed, explain why that movie made the list.

1.  Oh, how clumsy of me.  I meant to accuse you. - The Sound of Music - [livejournal.com profile] elocinoco

2.  If you want a Pepsi, pal, you're gonna pay for it. - Back to the Future - [livejournal.com profile] fafou and [livejournal.com profile] orange852

3.  I been runnin' for President.  Ain't winnin', though. - Glory - [livejournal.com profile] juice817

4.  We don't like what we don't understand, in fact it scares us ... - Beauty and the Beast - [livejournal.com profile] thyesc

5.  I want you to know that I will never want that wagon-wheel coffee table. - When Harry Met Sally - [livejournal.com profile] rustler

6.  Awa' wi' yer bother!
6a.  I believe God made me for a purpose -- for China.  But he also made me fast. - Chariots of Fire - [livejournal.com profile] rustler
(you get got two quotes, because i don't figure anyone'll get it from the first one.)

7.  Close your mouth, Michael, we are not a codfish. - Mary Poppins - [livejournal.com profile] rustler

8.  I suspect your father has been reading too much Dante. - A Room With a View - [livejournal.com profile] juice817 and [livejournal.com profile] thyesc

9.  I see.  You're going to the cemetery with your toothbrush.  How Egyptian. - The Birdcage - [livejournal.com profile] thyesc

10.  The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee. Short, tall, light, dark, caf, decaf, low-fat, non-fat, et cetera.  So people who don't know what the hell they're doing or who on earth they are can, for only two-ninety-five, get not just a cup of coffee but an absolutely defining sense of self: Tall. Decaf. Cappuccino. - You've Got Mail - [livejournal.com profile] thyesc

11.  Captain, being held by you isn't quite enough to get me excited. - The Empire Strikes Back - [livejournal.com profile] darththalia

12.  Hmm.  Well, just shows how much I know.  "With Mars, your ruler, in the ascendancy, you will be wiped out in a freak napalming incident and Helen says bollocks to you."  This guy's very good. - Sliding Doors - [livejournal.com profile] thyesc

Heh, no way. But the second line was one that's always stuck with me.
