footsore, and not at all fancy free
walked so much today. normally, i go from my building to either the main college site or my department, or both; possibly a bit of back and forth while i'm out; and back home again, for a total of maybe a mile and a half or possibly two miles in a day. today, i went out to the department to meet a professor; back home again to change, because i had misjudged the temperature outside; out to college for lunch; back home to pick up two-for-one vouchers with which to buy movie tickets; out to the movie theater (just as far as the other places) to get the tickets; and, eventually, back home again. for a total of something like five or six miles. oy.
good meeting with the professor, though. should lead, you know, to good places.
meanwhile, questions from
gblvr:
1. Is living in England as much fun as you thought it would be?
i don't know how much fun i thought it would be, to be honest. i mean, i've lived here before, so it's not "fun" in the sense of living in a whole new place, etc. etc. combine the weakness of the dollar and the distance from so many of my friends (not all!, because of course i do have friends here), and there are times i'm glad it's temporary and in fact wish it were even more so. but at the same time, i'm not, like, lying in bed at night and crying to come home right this minute. i just -- well, short answer, yeah, it pretty much is. :-)
2. 2. Aside from curling and cricket, are there any other strange sports that start with a C that you'd like to try?
i'm having a hard time thinking of sports that begin with C, actually. let me see if i can find some. oh! crew -- i rowed for a couple of months in college until it turned out i really was just too short to be effective at it. cycling? not that weird, and i'm not that into it.
3. What did you eat for dinner last night?
i had a really uninspiring pork chop in some kind of barbecue-like sauce, with rice and peas on the side. on sundays after evensong they feed the choir, which is a good deal (literally, singing for my supper [g]), but the food is never especially exciting.
4. Tell me about the best class you've ever taken?
hmm. [thinks] my first linguistics class was what made me want to change my major (into linguistics, i mean, not out of it), but i think the best class was maybe my first syntax class at georgetown. a lot of what i learned in that class has been outmoded by more recent research, but i was so into it, and learning how to make observations and whatnot -- it was fun (because i enjoyed the material and handled it well) and i learned a lot not just about syntax but about how to learn other things in the future. i think.
5. Do you have a dirty little secret, and if so, what is it?
that is actually two questions, miss thing, but i'll allow it because the answer to the first one is that i really don't think i do have a dirty little secret. around here i pretty much air all my laundry, don't i, whether y'all want to hear what i have to say or not. [smiles sweetly]
