the non-OUSU-funded student newspaper is hocking me about disaffiliation.  are we really disaffiliated?  (i have chosen to reply that we are unaffiliated, keeping my verbs and my adjectives separate, but i haven't explicitly called the reporter's attention to this.)  why?  what are the consequences?  do we still get the welfare benefits OUSU provides?  (me:  To the extent that OUSU provides welfare benefits to postgraduates, our students [as de facto individual members of OUSU] are entitled to avail themselves of those benefits.)  what about attendance and voting rights at OUSU Council?  are we affiliated with NUS?

sure. we only disaffiliated this year, which is why (i suspect) OUSU are so up in arms about it. ("up in arms" may be a little excessive, but not much, going by some of the things i'm hearing from queen P about what people are saying about me. which is ironic, that they're saying such things to him, given that he was president when the disaffiliation ball started rolling in the first place. [g] i happened to agree, but the whole thing was his idea -- i'm just the one who went through with it.)

I do believe that we're having another referendum on whether to reaffiliate to OUSU tomorrow... we had one that failed last year, and I think there's another attempt going on.

Given the troubles OUSU's going through, I really can't see much point in throwing money away by joining again.

i understood from your JCR president at last term's meeting with the proctors that you all vote annually on whether to reaffiliate (and for the past five or six years have voted no). unsurprising, really, the politics of OUSU and Oriel being respectively what they are. ;-)
