ugh ...

So your friendly neighborhood Fox is lactose-intolerant. Known this for several months now. (It happened quite suddenly; I realized that my bouts of feeling Not At All Well coincided pretty reliably with my having consumed dairy products; I went off dairy for several days, in an extremely scientific test [g], and felt entirely better; I had a dessert with whipped cream frosting, in a moment of vacancy, at a bridal shower, and was *miserable.* That confirmed it.) Carry Lactaid wherever I go.

Have pretty much figured out my limits; cream in coffee is okay, but much more than that and I need something fairly substantial to "dilute" the Bad Things; pizza is generally safe for me, because the crust counteracts the cheese quite nicely and I'm all good. Definitely stay away from yogurt, non-lactose-reduced milk, and so on. Cream sauces on pasta are okay; see above. Creme brulee is okay, thank god; I guess it's the egg that balances the cream.

For anyone who might have been thinking "Fox, my love, you're not lactose-intolerant at all; don't forget that your Troubles were also at their worst from about September 12 - 30," I can confidently say: hooey.

Cheesecake + three extra-strength Lactaid = Very Unhappy Fox. :-(

Hey! Lactose intolerance is spawned by having killed all the lactose-eating beasties in your stomach, usually through neglect.

It is, therefore, possible to Get Over It by repopulating the beasties. How, you ask?

Well, if you like yogurt, get active culture yogurt and have some for breakfast daily, or at least a couple times a week. This will do it all by itself in a couple weeks, although obviously you have to feed the little monsters occasionally or you're back where you started.

If you don't, it's possible to get the bacterial spores from better drugstores. They'll be next to the Lactaid, and you have one with meals every day. These, too, will repopulate the beasties, and again you have to feed them like any other pet.

Hope that helps.
