So okay.  Blah blah Mark Foley, yadda yadda Hastert, page e-mail instant-message blah.

I hear on the radio that there's a tip line that's just been set up, where you can call a number and hear a recording:  "If you have any information about inappropriate messages between Mark Foley and any current or former congressional page, speak after the tone."

Maybe it's just me, but I'd sort of like it if there were a confidential tip line where a person could leave information about inappropriate messages between any member of congress and any current or former congressional page.  I mean, does anyone think for even a moment that Foley is the only member who's ever solicited inappropriate relationships with pages?  He happened to have been foolish enough to do it in a recordable medium, and he happened to have been unlucky enough to get caught.  (Eventually.)  But if people think he's the only one, people might be interested in this bridge I have for sale.

I would like, in short, if the investigation were into Ways To Make Sure Congress Keeps Its Collective Hands Off The Teenagers, rather than Whether Mark Foley Is Growing Up To Be A Dirty Old Man.

Actually, it happened in '83. And almost certainly before, and since. Gerry Studds was found to have sexually propositioned House pages and actually had sex with a 17-year-old male page whom he took on a trip to Portugal.

[identity profile] darthfox.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and he was reelected, besides. :-) There was another representative at the same time who had sex with a 17-year-old female page, and resigned in disgrace.

I should have specified the only member of this congress.

Five times, I think. Heh. But no, you're right.

Five times CAUGHT. I'm sure it's umpty-dozen times successfully sneaked.

Yeah, the idea of a tipline for a SPECIFIC PERSON is sort of bizarre. Not to mention potentially the biggest wank/prank magnet the world has ever know.

[identity profile] darthfox.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
No, no -- Studds was re-elected five more times after he was caught banging a 17-year-old page.

But I continue to think the tip line is a half-baked idea.

No, five times re-elected after having been caught.

Yeah, the idea of a tipline for a SPECIFIC PERSON is sort of bizarre.

Not when you consider that politicians are only concerned with the immediate problem and not the broader issue. Actually, that would apply to most federal agencies.

Not to mention potentially the biggest wank/prank magnet the world has ever know.

When we heard the message on the news last night, I joked to my wife that I should call that number and claim that Foley propositioned me when I was a page. ;-)

[identity profile] kmg-365.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
You are correct. He was re-elected five times. And his party gave him a standing ovation when he turned his back in Congress when the announcement of his censure was being read.

To all the people that hem and haw about the vast right wing conspiracy that is putting Foley (D) on various news broadcasts I say "he probably wishes he was a Democrat, because then he would be hailed as a hero and wouldn't have to resign."

He's probably breathing a slight sigh of relief, though (if one could under the circumstances), because the story isn't about him anymore. It's about Hastert. Which is absolutely absurd.

[identity profile] juice817.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Amen. Ann Coulter said that when a Republican gets caught, he resigns and crawls off to hide in abject embarrassment but when it's a Democrat, he just gets pissy.

The media requires a story, and since Foley's hiding, they've decided to blame Hastert. *rolls eyes*

[identity profile] kmg-365.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps a Democrat having sex with a minor isn't seen as being out of the ordinary. ;-)

(yeah, I know...a cheap shot, but hey...)

Since the media seems to be entertaining conspiracy theories, perhaps they should entertain the conspiracy theory that Soros is behind releasing the story on the last day before recess. Perhaps they should also look into who was holding this information for over two years, and whether or not they violated the privacy of either the page or his family by going public.

[identity profile] juice817.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughs*

Ooh, I like that conspiracy theory. But there's no way they'll entertain the notion that Soros could do something underhanded. And when there's the opportunity to roast a Republican so close to midterm elections, they won't look a gift horse in the mouth. I'm honestly surprised we haven't heard the kid's name yet. Or have we and I missed it?

[identity profile] kmg-365.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I remember his name being mentioned, but I don't recall what it is. Or who reported it.

The flood gates are definitely opening at the most inopportune time (for the Republicans), and it's not just relegated to Foley. I guess in politics, if ya can't beat 'em, smear 'em!

(I'm not saying Foley should be absolved. Far from it. If this took place 2+ years ago, it should have been addressed then. Then again, 2003 wasn't an election year...)

[identity profile] juice817.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
No, exactly. There's no excuse for it not being addressed two years ago. And to be fair, the smearing goes both ways and just illustrates the hypocrisy on both sides. But the timing is definitely suspicious.

[identity profile] darthfox.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The name (by which I mean AIM handle) was unobscured for about twenty seconds on ABC.com before someone went "oh shit we didn't obscure that name" and they fixed it.

[identity profile] darthfox.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
who was holding this information for over two years

Hastert, you mean? I think they are looking into it.

:-P

[identity profile] kmg-365.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The information given to Hastert was fairly innocent: asking him what he wanted for Christmas, how he was doing post-Katrina. Yeah, asking for a photo is skeevy, but Hastert (or someone in the chain of command) had a cease and desist meeting with him.

I don't subscribe to Bob Beckel's train of thought: that gay men should be kept away from male pages because dag gum it, they can't help themselves. Since they're gay, you know they're going to try to hit on them. So I wouldn't assume that the e-mails I mentioned were indicative of Foley wanting to get into the page's pants.

The more slacious details (the IMs) weren't known until a week ago. At least that's what the media arm of the Republican Party (ABC) is reporting.

:-)

[identity profile] darthfox.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I was actually fairly impressed that Foley resigned as promptly as he did, and a little disappointed that he kept himself in the headlines with the checking-in-to-rehab priest-made-me-do-it thing. He was doing really well with the disappearing, and then not so much.

Hastert and the leadership may indeed deserve blame if the people are telling the truth who say they alerted them to this ages ago.

I find Ann Coulter calling anyone "pissy" to be incredibly ironic.
