memo to movie folk: people's own accents are awesome!

On the drive home last night, the radio was talking about movies (as it does on Mondays -- with puns, unfortunately) and ran a clip of Ioan Gruffudd talking about Fantastic Four. And I realized this is the first time I've actually heard a Welsh accent come out of that man's mouth. Rock on!

Tragically, I can't find the quote, but it was something like this: "Well, it's always difficult, isn't it, in the summer, because there are a lot of big films, tent-pole films. This year, you know, Spider-Man, and Pirates, and [I'm sure he mentioned another couple of movies]. So the competition is ... . Oh, and Harry Potter! Oh, dear."

I've seldom understood why many movies feel they can't allow people to have their own accents. I mean, okay, in a movie like Fantastic Four I get it, since it wouldn't match the comic strip, but other ones? Why do they always take someone with a great voice, and then say, "Okay, now, try to sound nothing like yourself?"
