Yes, I know. I have three degrees in linguistics (none of them is a PhD, but that's an issue for another time). :-)
There was a bit on the Daily Show last night on what would have happened if we'd never left Vietnam the way we're never leaving Iraq; Asif pointed out that the president got an MBA in order to avoid going to the war, and if he'd had to avoid it for that much longer, maybe he'd have got x number of other degrees. I forget what the other ones were, but they were silly suggestions in various ways (unsurprisingly, because, Daily Show [g]), but then Asif said "Maybe he'd have gotten a PhD in linguistics, Jon. Our president! Linguistics! Can you imagine?" -- It was clear from the tone that this would have been the height of ridiculousness (again, Daily Show [g]), but I couldn't tell if he was mocking the president or linguistics. Or both. Or how I felt about that.
I think given the amount of verbal gaffes (nukular, strategery, etc.) that the President has made, he was mocking the President and his grasp of the English language (or language in general). I'm kinda wondering now, whether, had the media been as rabid as it now back in the 60s whether JFK's "I am a jelly doughnut" comment would have caused as much of a ruckus, or whether given his otherwise decent oratorical skills they would have allowed that minor foreign language slip-up to slide.
