torchwood 2x01 "kiss kiss bang bang"

Okay, first of all, let me say this: MY LOVE FOR IANTO JONES CANNOT BE TEXTUALLY VERBALLY RENDERED. I could do without the camera whacking me over the head with the reaction shots, but I refuse to blame the character for the clumsy editing. :-) Ianto is brave and strong and speaks calmly even though his voice shakes and is the hero! and is called "Eye Candy" and counts down the last nine-odd minutes before the splodey bomb goes off with undisguised glee. I adore him.

My conversation with [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon, by the way, had to do with squee. I'm here in my happy Jack/Ianto place and everybody is flipping right out over Jack/Spike, and I'm all, okay, that's a good kiss, sure, and hey, a good kiss followed by a knock-down drag-out fight, total fangirl bonus, but look, Jack/Ianto! In fact, Ianto/Jack, if you want to adopt a (admittedly dodgy) convention I think I remember someone talking about once -- BRIEFLY -- in TPM where you read left to right and top to bottom, right, because it sure looks to me in the trailer like it's Ianto kissing Jack rather than vice versa. Ianto! Who cares about this guy with the silly jacket and the bad boots? IANTO! Unless he's eaten band candy, I mean. (Sadly, it appears that next week's episode may indeed have some band-candy aspects to it, which, FEH.)

Anyway. Moving on. The episode: yeah, while my love for Ianto knows few if any limitations, my patience for Gwen may be reaching its boundaries. "No one else will have me"? Tell JACK -- ?! I did think the way Rhys gave the line "Yeah, well, I love you more" was exactly right, because OMFG HE DOES AND DOES SHE DESERVE HIM OF COURSE NOT. Also, emo!Jack was working my last few nerves. Owen, on the other hand, didn't piss me off, and I didn't find Tosh completely useless. So on the whole, team grade is a solid B. Spike John Whozit was fine. Transparent, but transparency was more or less what was called for, right?, so whatever. Oh, and look, we seem to have us a throughline for the season. Excellent.

I WANT ME SOME MORE IANTO. Look how he's still the baby face, but he's somehow more grown-up and hard-edged at the same time. D'aww.

Memo to [livejournal.com profile] cordelia_v etc.: look, fannish content! I know, right?

I read the "no one else'll have me" thing as a sort of dead-pan bit of sarcasm. She knows fine well half a dozen other people would have her, but it's very sort of, mmm, working-class coy to say that.

Oh. I like that interpretation! *adopts* Because that scene was one of only two in the whole episode that didn't work for me.

Hmm. I hear you, but the big wide eyes confuse the issue for me -- it seemed past deadpan and into sincere. I could be wrong, though; my ear for British sarcasm is good but not faultless. :-)

I got this vibe as well. I thought it was a very deadpan calling Jack out on his somewhat surprised reaction, mixed with a tinge of guilt over her little thing with Owen.
