Look, I don't mean to be rude, but THIS NEVER OCCURRED TO THEM BEFORE?! "What if the Rift also takes" -- like, it maybe HAS TO in order to get the things it's been LEAVING you all this time? And I know you're outside the government and beyond the police, but you like never noticed that there were an awful lot of missing people? Isn't it your JOB to monitor the Rift?!
... and that's just in the first sixteen minutes.
[eta: Also, how much of a dick is PC Andy Davidson?
In the remaining time, I mainly wanted to knock a lot of heads together. This is quite aside from the complete failure of deductive reasoning alluded to above -- although, shit, man, do these guys ever watch the show?! -- and also from the, ARGH, when Jack says the subject is closed and storms away, and Ianto makes easy-now-Gwen hand gestures and says "I'll talk to him", why is the next thing Gwen does to call after him instead of letting Ianto do what he does? If I were Ianto, I'd file that under Not Helping.
Argh.
ellen_fremedon, you know how you said we should take the pen away from you if you ever show signs of writing anything where all or even most of the conflict would go away if the characters just talk to each other? Yeah. I mean, I get where Jack is coming from and why he's hiding the Riftugees (a term I just made up, and I'm a little angry at Chris Chibnall for not thinking of it) from everyone. But he should tell his own staff, surely?! Wouldn't it have saved a lot of time and drama (and Gwen walking in on him and Ianto, although I suppose he didn't mind that so much) if Jack had just said "Listen, Gwen, the Rift sends back about two percent of the people it takes, and they are in No Shape to return to society, so we house them in a sort of Walter Reed Army Hospital out on Alcatraz and it's just, trust me, it's better that way, as far as their families are concerned, they're just gone." Or, failing that, if Ianto had said something similar ("One day he's a fifteen-year-old kid, and the next day he's the remains of Anakin Skywalker. Leave his mother be.") instead of getting all cute with the Garman.
Would have been a much shorter episode, though.]
