it was a really ho-hum (and, after four glasses, not especially tasty) merlot. i have a bottle of shiraz that i'm not allowed to open until the merlot is gone. made some headway on that last night. :-)

Yeah, I'd prefer the shiraz, too. Every once in a while I find a merlot I like, but they're few and far between.
