so, yeah, 1923 -- i shouldn't get too worked up about the use of the word "savage" (we've got the adjective and the noun here), because at the time it was written, the writers didn't know any better. but damned if it doesn't throw me right out of the article every time i hit it, and make me disposed to be unsympathetic to the writer's actual views on language.
