new year's yay!

it's amazing how much Norman has grown in just two days.  her mother is managing to get her to eat more at each sitting now, so she can hang in there for longer between feedings -- and, now, when she cries, others of us can often settle her down without having to make her mother feed her.  somehow?  i have a particular skill for getting her to quit crying and go to sleep!  i feel extra-special that way.  :-)  (last night, she was asleep at long last and then her great-grandmother spoke too loudly and woke her up.  it took all three of us half an hour to get her to sleep again, and out comes the great-grandmother again and almost woke her up again.  ARGH.  but, better.)  and, so cute!  i can almost not quite stand it.

in [livejournal.com profile] yuletide news, as you've probably seen by now, i wrote Also Ran, a bit of Chariots of Fire (Abrahams/Lindsay) for [livejournal.com profile] peak_in_darien.  it hasn't done as well as last year's "Fortune's Fool", but like i said before, it wasn't likely to.  :-)  it's at my site now as well.  i'm also in a position to say that my present, Guestright, was written by [livejournal.com profile] evilprodigy -- thanks, P!

am now watching DVDs of Firefly and having fun looking for people who might appear to be at least part Chinese (since, you know, all the language is English and Mandarin, it seems like it would make some sense is all).

one of the things proven today was that even on vacation, i am not immune to Unscheduled Naps. i lay down to read for a bit before dinner, and was unconscious when my sister-in-law called at the time on the reservation to say it'd be good if i joined everyone at the restaurant. :->

the USB mouse attached to this computer works fine, apart from it occasionally 'blinks' and relocates the pointer over in the bottom left corner of the screen.

i have notes on the whole trip, and will in fact have a Whole Trip Report at some point, but i wanted to use this title [points to subject line] before i forgot it.

got a wee prezzie for Norman, and a card with a calligraphy-style rooster on it (this being the Year of the Rooster) to go with. yay!

leaving (along with my parents) tomorrow morning. fortunately, the taxi is coming to take us to the airport at 9:45, a completely civilized hour. the following day, everyone else (my brother and sister-in-law, her sister and brother-in-law, his mother, and my brother's mother-in-law) has to leave for the airport at 6am. poor bastards. heh.

[eta: oh, also. have been getting some lovely comments on my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide story (and one in particular that i hug close and call George -- beta types will probably recognize that comment on sight [g]), a couple of recs, and the recipient seemed sincere in her liking of it. :-) so, that's good and respectable and yay! last year i was utterly spoiled for comments and recs -- not that i wasn't proud of my story and pleased that so many people were impressed by it, but it was my first yuletide, and here i was among the belles of the ball. heh. i told myself ages ago that i was going to have to keep in mind that that was a freak occurrence, and i have done so -- but i am glad this year's story hasn't gone completely un-recced. [slightly ashamed of own tendencies to be praise-seeking whore] (i don't feel, by the way, that i'm giving away anything by mentioning that the thing has turned up on a small number of rec lists. there are a lot of things that have been recced only a few times, and a few things that have been recced a lot of times, just like always. plus, only a couple of days until the reveal anyway. my cover is un-blown.)]

so my christmas is almost over, while for most of y'all it's barely begun. am in a whole different internet place in the hotel than i was this time last night, but this one appears to come with less chance of people reading over my shoulder, so it's better. (there is wireless and broadband in the whole place, but it's not free, and why shell out in the room when there's computers i can use up here, is the real issue.) (of course, as my brother points out, if it were someone else's money -- for values of 'someone else' not including one's parents -- i'd spend it with no compunction whatsoever.)

anyway, i see that [livejournal.com profile] yuletide is live. my present is guestright, a nice little slice of horatio (/hamlet, and laertes-related jealousy), written by whom i have no idea. :-) but she did a good job, whoever she is! and i'm off to read some more now, although being as how i'm in a public-ish lab i'm not going to be able to sit here reading all night ...

happy christmas, everyone. mwah!

1.  [livejournal.com profile] yuletide story uploaded!  came up with a title and a summary at 2:30 am and was happy with them both!

2.  happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] darththalia and my dad!

trip home uneventful.  [livejournal.com profile] yuletide coming right along.  must turn attention to thesis at some point, but not right this minute.

zzz.

  • cold is quickly getting better.
  • making steady, if glacial, progress on the thesis work.
  • have more or less decided to bag the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide work in progress, or at least hit pause on it, and go with the other option.  i had some good thoughts last night on the second option, and that way i won't wind up disqualifying myself.  then, once i've handed something in, if i can work out how to do the other thing, my recipient can have two presents.

may go to the movies later.  also more shopping for house stuff with the mom.  mmmvacation.  :-)

Hi Santa!  OH MY GOODNESS I am more excited than is probably healthy.  I hope you are too!

I want to make it very clear from the outset that I am really easy when it comes to being pleased with nice things people do for me -- I'm mainly happy that something nice has been done for me, so I don't want you to fret at all about whether you've satisfied my request or not.

Please feel free to use the notes as guidelines, or to disregard them entirely if necessary.  I care more about character consistency than anything else, and a plot that is internally consistent is always a good thing.  I don't mind death and destruction; I don't mind angst and drama; I don't even especially mind weird kinks and whatnot, if it's motivated.  Motivation yay.

On my flist, the fan-types who know me and my tastes pretty well include [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth, [livejournal.com profile] cmshaw, [livejournal.com profile] darthhellokitty, [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon, [livejournal.com profile] juice817, [livejournal.com profile] merrycontrary, [livejournal.com profile] mrshamill, [livejournal.com profile] orange852, and [livejournal.com profile] the_emu.  I hope if you choose to contact them (with questions like 'what goes on in that girl's head?!' or 'can I get some of what she's smoking?') they will answer relatively promptly; who knows, you might even be able to get them to beta, although I obviously can't promise you any of their time.

And, you know, go ahead and leave an anonymous response here if you want to ask me something specifically.  I have disabled anonymous-commenter IP logging, not that I have much idea what to do with IP addresses when I am logging them, so I'll have no earthly way to know who you are. [mods just asked that we not encourage this, so forget it!, and i've turned logging back on.]

Oh, I'm so looking forward to this whole thing!  Whee!

love,
Fox

i have my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide assignment!  i am spoiled for choice omg!  [falls down and dies]  [has trouble choosing]  [carries on cleaning room and sorting laundry]

oh -- back for just a second.  last year's betas were [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon and [livejournal.com profile] merrycontrary; if they, or any of the rest of you, think you'd like to give me beta help this year, please feel encouraged to drop me a line.

i finished the deep dust of years in july, just hours before HBP came out -- and since then, there's been nothing i'm actively working on.  for a while that was calming and refreshing and whatnot, but not anymore.  soon i will have a [livejournal.com profile] yuletide assignment, though by its nature, that won't last very long.  just, lately i've been wishing i were writing something.
fox: kit fox with a santa hat. (santafox)
have completed [livejournal.com profile] yuletide signup!

had to keep notes to be referred to in the event of a ctrl-click mishap; so i am now in a position to tell you that i offered thirty-seven fandoms (5 with character specifications and 32 without), beating last year's effort, when according to my e-mail confirmation i offered eight.  i can't tell if that means i'm waaay more adventurous, or if it means there were that many new fandoms i'm familiar with this year.  (all 8 of last year's are among this year's 37, for what it's worth.)  also, there were some duplicates, so i've actually offered (i think) 35 distinct fandoms; also also, there were just a few more that i recognized and know vaguely but decided i don't know well enough to write in them.  (there were still more that i recognize by name but that's it.  we will not consider them.)

i have requested As You Like It (Touchstone and Jaques, though not necessarily Touchstone/Jaques), Pride and Prejudice (Darcy/Bingley; 'in want of a wife', indeed), Hamlet (Hamlet, Horatio, and/or Laertes), or The Truman Show (how messed up is that Christof, yo?).

letter to santa will surely be forthcoming once the assignments are handed out.  i should maybe also have requested someone to write my thesis for me!  :-D

thought today's MPhil thesis presentation was 10-11 am.  got to the department at 9:55 (itself an impressive feat) to learn that in fact it's advanced syntax tomorrow that's 10-11, and the thing today is 10:30-12.  [headdesk.]  cheerfully spend the next half-hour on a department computer (whose internet cache has since been emptied) beginning to work out what i'm prepared to offer for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide.  not a waste of time at all!

then the gym, and then two dreary meetings right in a row, and now more yuletide before i go off to sing a special wednesday edition of evensong, for all souls' day.  whew!  busy busy fox.
