The last time I had a loaner on account of my car was in the shop, it was a Hyundai Elantra from Enterprise that I compared to having bad sex.

This time, it's a Chevy Cobalt from Budget, which is ... well, if we're going to continue the metaphor, I suppose it's like sleeping with someone much younger than yourself -- and it's fine, but you wonder what all the fuss is about, and you don't think everyone needs to be in a hurry all the time.  In particular, this one is white (which is stupid) and has a rear spoiler (which is not only stupid, but also actually obstructs some of my rearview, so I can't always tell if there's safe space to change lanes).  It's still an automatic, but at least it's got some kick.  Heap big thanks to [livejournal.com profile] esti626 for coming and getting me and ferrying me to the airport to get this rental car, which I'm going to have to name something like Lance.

Also, I left the TV on while I was out getting the car, so I could see the rest of the game on DVR -- and I'm glad I did, because even though I know how it ends, I'd have been sad to miss Asdrubal Cabrera's great catch in the top of the 7th.  Damn!

fox: technical difficulties: please stand by. (technical difficulties)
Is there an outside chance anyone can give me a lift to DCA tonight around 11 so I can pick up my rental car? And then, even better, give me a lift home from DCA tomorrow night around 11 when I've returned it?

[eta: Chadley Saxa! [livejournal.com profile] thyesc is getting me home tomorrow night, and may be taking me to the airport this evening as well -- but that's not assured, so if anyone wants to leap on this opportunity, you can still speak up. :-) ]
fox: snoopy is jubilant! (snoopy dance (by rahalia))
1.  [livejournal.com profile] la_rainette.  she spent omg i don't even know how long ripping her CD of the St John Passion and then zipping it and sending it to me.  so i can listen and read along with my score and learn all those goddamn eighth notes quavers!  (and i can burn a copy so my friend in the choir can do the same!)  love.

2.  [livejournal.com profile] datlowen.  he taught me how to expand a function in Excel, without which knowledge i would still be typing '=LN(PRODUCT(Ex,(1/1090000)))' for ever-increasing values of x now, and it would be hours and hours and hours before i discovered that it would be better to use =LOG10 instead of =LN, and that the figure should be 100100000 instead of 109000.  so much love.

yay!

[livejournal.com profile] orange852 is cool because she's at the end of my list.  :-D  kidding!  but she'd have said something similar about me; like a lot of people i enjoy, [livejournal.com profile] orange852 speaks my kind of snark.  we often not only agree but phrase things in the same way, yell at the same people for the same reasons, etc.  plus she thinks i'm cute.  ;-)  what's not to love?
fox: little cartoon self (doll)
oh, i adore this woman.  for one thing, her mood is always either "merry" or "contrary", which is just cute.  but the real thing is, i don't remember the last time i ran into someone so genuinely sweet[livejournal.com profile] merrycontrary is such a sweetheart that we sometimes have to persuade her to snark just so she won't give herself an ulcer.  because on her own she wouldn't do it, i mean.  [dies]  what a doll.  and even without a snark reflex, she's funny!  i don't know very many people who can do that.  [loves [livejournal.com profile] merrycontrary]
fox: little cartoon self (doll)
oh, where to begin, with the coolness of [livejournal.com profile] elance.

it is this:  she is definitely among the bravest people i have ever encountered.  her life when i first knew her was not how she wanted it to be -- aggressively so -- and she decided she was going to change that and then she did, which when you're coming from where she was coming from can't be an easy decision to make, much less an easy thing to do.  she encountered a lot of doubt from a lot of quarters (including mine -- i wasn't going to lie, when asked what i thought, was i?), and did it anyway, because she knew what she believed was right for her, and that is outstanding.
fox: little cartoon self (doll)
ah, [livejournal.com profile] obsessed1.  she's cool because she brings teh snark.  what else can i say?  :-)  she and i seem to share a general attitude, which is, If you don't have something nice to say -- come and sit by me.  (thanks, alice.)

behind the snark, though, beats a heart of pure gold, and because i am a slacker and have left this waiting to be posted for two months, i am in a position to report rock-solid evidence of that:  [livejournal.com profile] obsessed1 just cut off more than half of her hair and donated it to Locks of Love, which, let me tell you, when your hair is down past your waist, is not an easy thing to do.  i, for example, intend to do it one day; but it is not this day.  i applaud [livejournal.com profile] obsessed1's fortitude and coolness.
fox: little cartoon self (doll)
be assured i have not forgotten you! [livejournal.com profile] obsessed1, [livejournal.com profile] elance, [livejournal.com profile] merrycontrary, and [livejournal.com profile] orange852 are mad cool and will hear about why just as soon as i'm not on deadline anymore (which may mean when i'm back at school, as i've got academic deadlines as well). sorry to keep you waiting. :-/
fox: little cartoon self (doll)
[livejournal.com profile] lysrouge is very cool. she's committed and determined and those are valuable things to be when you're young. her fortitude in the face of difficulty is damned inspiring -- i bet money i couldn't turn my life around the way she's done. plus, she's funny!

very cool. that's all there is to that.
fox: little cartoon self (doll)
[livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine is cool -- first of all, she's recced my stuff, which is an automatic thumbs-up, yes indeed. :-) but even if she weren't wise, perceptive, etc. enough to recommend my writing, she'd be unbearably cool just for the style of her recs. if i've never heard of anything she's talking about, she can convince me to read a thing anyway just with a rec -- and occasionally just with a title of a rec. honestly. not too many people can make me laugh out loud, but [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine is one of them, and that's cool.

plus, she doesn't know me from a hole in the ground, but she was (or at any rate seemed) genuinely concerned when i was down with a nasty chest cold earlier this term, and that's cool, too.

things that are cool about [livejournal.com profile] rev_tobias:

-- he is at least bi-, if not more-, lingual
-- he shares (in fact, he's probably a good deal responsible for) my conservatism wrt canon (in star wars, for example, The Films Are Canon, Full Stop); right? i'm not mis-remembering that? well, if i'm wrong, then, that's just a reason i think [livejournal.com profile] rev_tobias is cool. i've been wrong before. ;-)
-- he's appropriately stubborn, but he doesn't get obnoxious when you out-argue him. :-D

plus, of course, he has a jesse custer icon.
fox: little cartoon self (doll)
... and she knows damn well why.

but i will tell all of you anyway! aside from being one of the sweetest, most patient people i know (and also having modesty coming out of her ears, because she never believes you when you tell her she's a saint), which is, you know, worth far more than rubies etc. etc.; and aside from being funny as hell, and the right sort of stubborn (why don't stubborn and patient go together more often?); aside from those things, she sent me presents.

randomly! i'm living in Region 2, and [livejournal.com profile] juice817 sent me the Region 1 DVD of PoA. because she wanted me to have it. i'm not worthy.

[big hugs for [livejournal.com profile] juice817]

[livejournal.com profile] sharp_tongue writes lucius malfoy impeccably, which in my book earns a person like eight thousand cool points right out of the gate. also, she's smart and funny and annoyed by the same people things i'm annoyed by, which makes her even more cool. :-) plus: when she got terminally frustrated by her job, she found and applied for and got a new one. that's always cool, no matter who does it. i wish i were better at that myself.
fox: little cartoon self (doll)
i'll tell you, [livejournal.com profile] la_rainette is a sweetheart. look at her talking about the everyday existence of a family with two small children -- it's often funny as hell, and without deliberately going for the laughs; just from [livejournal.com profile] la_rainette's skill at observation. added to which, the fact of raising small children is praise-worthy; and doing so in a country far from your own (once upon a time there was a frog who crossed an ocean ...) is brave and impressive.

there are a significant number of ways in which i wish i could be more like [livejournal.com profile] la_rainette. she is, as i was taught to say in middle-school french, très gentile et vachement chouette!
