Notes:

What I've done here is more or less put film!Alex and film!Henry in the book world (hence tagging with both versions of Henry's name, although who knows how that's going to sync out), also importing the film!King in place of the book!Queen. Thanks for indulging me. Sorry for the complete lack of Lana Del Rey.

Holy crap, you guys, I began this like 20 years ago, recently revived it, and here we are thanks to the heroic beta efforts of [personal profile] resonant and [personal profile] ellen_fremedon (and others in later chapters, don't think I'm forgetting you).

A long time ago, I posted a story in which I used “it” as a personal pronoun for an individual whose gender the POV character couldn’t identify. That was a terrible choice, of course. Normally I believe in leaving old stories as they are even if we’d have written them differently now; in this case I couldn’t bear it and have gone back and corrected my earlier offense, but I’m acknowledging it here and in the notes because it wouldn’t be right to pretend this had never happened.

Apropos of this recent thing, I'm in the last day of letting this thing bake and hope to post it this afternoon. So I'm looking to see if there are any last-minute typos or etc. that need fixing,[1] and I was this close to a wholesale change to British spelling, but I can't quite make myself do it; I can read honour and humour and so on fluently, and licence and practise without too much of a stumble, but I just can't manage -ise endings instead of -ize. Oxford says I don't have to!, that even in British English words that have the Greek root -ίζω should properly be spelled with a z, and you know OUP has all my loyalty - try to take away my Oxford comma, for example - but I'd have to go through and swap all my single and double quotation marks and put the punctuation outside them and so on, and I feel like that would be where I'd be the most likely to leave some glaring evidence that an American did this. Way more likely than in vocabulary and syntax. So maybe I'll just leave it.

[eta: 1. See, it is important to do this!, because I just found a parenthetical reference that I should have deleted because it called back to an earlier remark that I had deleted. Away with you, vestige! /zap/]

I had almost forgotten what this feels like. I wrote a fic! A real one! I haven't done that in literally years, and even longer if you reflect that it's not Yuletide.

It's out with betas now and I'm going to have to put it away and stop bouncing on the edge of my seat.
