fox: yuletide: gorey man with a tiny present. (yuletide (by Livia))
There's been an uptick lately in emails from the AO3 notifying me that people are liking (or at least clicking "kudos" on) my story from Yuletide, um, 2013?, Former Detectives Club, which was barely enough words of Broadchurch* to qualify. I suppose it may have been recced somewhere? I used to know how to track recs down, but I've been out of the loop so long I'm not sure I still remember what to do (or have any idea if you can do the same now, or if that's Done). So but I guess Thanks, Recommender! Appreciate what I assume were kind words. :-) (And thanks, readers!)

* So the timing is probably Good Omens–related, now that I think about it.

Yuletide! There were reveals!, so I can now share that I wrote Former Detectives Club, about 1003 words - seriously, at about 4pm on deadline day I was agonizing over every phrase, not wanting to change "couldn't be arsed" to "didn't care" because I needed the word count - of Broadchurch that actually pleases me quite a bit, in its small quiet way. My recipient seemed to like it very much - at least if she was faking it she was doing so very convincingly :-) - and I believe, although I don't have documentation at my fingertips, that the fact that it appeared on someone's rec list the other day means my streak of getting at least one recommendation in every Yuletide is still unbroken. (I may only get in on a technicality for 2007, and I may not even need that technicality if I missed the boat completely in 2008, but whatever. I like when people like my stuff, is the point.)

I find that I am even more pleased to hit Friday every week in this job than I was in my old job. I think this is because I like the job less, so I savor the weekends more. The search continues.

Looks like we've got a room block at a hotel for our wedding guests coming in from out of town. HOLY CRAP WE ARE REALLY GETTING MARRIED. <-= that reaction hasn't let up. We're not doubting the decision, just quietly freaking out about it as we go on with the business of making it happen. I'm accustomed to the ring being on my finger. I still like looking at it catch the light. :-) We are getting used to the word fiancé(e). The other day he reflected that during the reception someone's going to walk up to him and say "Dude, where's your wife?", and he's going to just about faint. Heh.

My favorite Chinese restaurant closed several months ago, and it appears to have been a rent-related issue - because they are supposed to reopen a couple of blocks away any minute now. But their website says "the end of 2013", which has obviously come and gone, and their phone message says "in early January 2014", so I am eagerly awaiting the return of delicious kung pao. Alas that can't be what I have for dinner tonight. SOON.

I watched Doctor Who last week. I liked it fine. There were things I didn't care for, but I'm learning to live with that by not caring as much about the whole business as I used to, which I guess is sad, but my point is, if you don't give the thing your heart, the thing can't break it. I did like Matt Smith's old-man gesturing.

I watched Sherlock last night. I liked it. I liked Mary very much, and she and Sherlock seem to have instantly made themselves allies in the business of being devoted to John Watson, so that's all right. One of these days I'd like it if Sherlock would stop playing cruel mind games with John. (I live in hope.)

Home from midnight Mass 2am. Himself reports that he woke up when I came in, but not enough to bother looking at the clock, and he did go back to sleep, so I'm calling that a success. Back up again and on my way out to sing two (!) more regular daylight Masses and then home for roast dinner - we're not doing movies and Chinese food like normal people, but that's okay, because roast beef and Yorkshire pudding is nummy. And Christmas pudding I made myself. I hope it is delicious. [frets]

Meanwhile, I have a lovely Yuletide story from a lovely anonymous person: If Fate Should Take You From My Side, which is a collection of vignettes about how Mulan's relationship with and actions on behalf of her father could have gone differently. I love it and I love the person who wrote it and I miss my dad. :-}

Happy Christmas/happy Wednesday!

yuletide!

Dear Lovely Yuletide Author Person )

Feel free to go spelunking in my LJ ([livejournal.com profile] darthfox) or DW, or to consult with people who already know me ([personal profile] ellen_fremedon is a good place to start), if you'd like more insight into what goes on in my head.

Thank you lovely Yuletide writer person!

After two years away, I expect to be back in [livejournal.com profile] yuletide this year, so I am watching the new mods learn the modding ropes with a certain degree of interest.

Clothes, body shape fussing, etc. )

Tonight I am going to make the cinnamon apple honey cake I've made for the past few Rosh Hashanahs, and bring it to work tomorrow. I thought about making it in muffin tins instead of cake pans, but then decided that won't work because the apple slices go in the bottom of the cake pan and then the cake gets inverted, and having apples at the bottom of your muffin cups wouldn't be the same. Putting the apples on the top of the muffins I think they'd get dried out. So regular cake pans it is.
