Sep. 25th, 2003 04:52 pm... annoy me:
hiccups.
the fact that it's been two and a half weeks since i ordered curling-shoe stuff and i haven't heard a peep about shipping (still less has the stuff actually arrived). (update: placed order september 8; stuff shipped september 22. disgraceful, but it's a small company and this is the hurry-up pre-season, so what do you want. they did apologize.)
grading papers.
the fact that the maintenance guy came last wednesday and put a patch and one layer of joint compound over the hole in my ceiling, said he'd come back the next day -- or, if the storm was as big as it was expected to be, monday -- to put up the second layer and paint, and hasn't been heard from since.
being on hold.
... amuse me:
getting a gas bill that says "our records show your account is past due - please pay promptly" and "total due: $0.00". what happened was, my last payment didn't reach them until the day after the bill was printed, but since i've been here a year, my deposit was refunded so i have a credit much greater than one month's bill. i probably have three more months' worth of credit, depending how soon it gets cold; in other words, i may move before i run out this credit, so the city utility billing office may never get money from me again. :-)
... make me happy:
being done for the day and having no big work to do for tomorrow (except the aforementioned grading papers, grr).
i seem not to have a cold, for once, and my ankle is healing nicely. i feel -- almost -- good! yay! i might even be energized to finish straightening up my apartment.
working e-mail! two addresses, both running through outlook express (firewall: check; anti-virus scanner: check), and no need to use hotmail ever again! [happy dance]

theferrett, long ago on a message board far, far away.

Fox Makes Fun Of Smart People
Sep. 25th, 2003 08:17 pmi know -- it's a much less interesting feature than
datlowen's Makes Fun Of Stupid People essays. sorry. my students (the ones i teach as well as the ones i grade, the former being a subset of the latter) are actually pretty bright, which is why it's so frustrating when they keep doing the same things over and over.
there are three words on this transcription assignment that include the sound that we normally spell "j", as in judge. the symbols the kids are allowed to use don't include anything like that, which the professor tells them is because there isn't a symbol for that sound -- because it's actually two sounds, according to the theories we've been working with so far this semester.
1. in class on monday, no fewer than five kids asked how to transcribe that (those) sound(s). the professor says -- each time -- that they should transcribe it exactly as it sounds. the specific transcription has been mentioned at least once in class, as well.
1a. i've also gone over it in my class, for the approximately half the kids who are taking my class.
2. and yet one paper after another has -- not the wrong symbol, but the right symbol on one of the words with that sound in it and the wrong symbol on one or both of the other ones! i mean, does genius begin with the same sound that outrage ends with, or doesn't it?
(answer we're looking for: it does.)
