fox: curling stones: i love this game (curling)
first game today: i don't really remember it. played well, won, no real excitement. second game today: dude. gave up five in the third, managed to claw our way back and win anyway (by stealing three in the eighth, no less, on two rather disastrous misses by the opposing skip). my dorkiness level: OFF THE CHARTS. i'm surprised [livejournal.com profile] datlowen isn't selling tickets on the side to the annual Watch Fox Be A Dork festival.

but this is all small-time stuff. it's what i was planning, in the car on the way home, to say before i hit the rack -- early game tomorrow, do-or-die; if we lose, we're done (but, curling on sunday, always a good thing), but if we win, we advance to what skip B called "the hardware round", i.e. the event finals. yeah, so, curling. but the big news is this:

OXFORD SAID YES.

i am not making this up. the thin envelope came from cambridge in yesterday's mail, confirming what i already knew, which was that they were sorry not to be able to offer me a place, thousands of qualified applicants, yadda yadda yadda. so today was a thin envelope from oxford; but when i opened it, the first word i saw was "conditional", and the second was "pleased," and the whole letter says:

Dear Ms Fox

I am very pleased to be able to inform you that the Committee for Comparative Philology and General Linguistics has agreed to admit you to the M.Phil. in Comparative Philology and General Linguistics, with effect from Michaelmas Term 2004. You will be advised of your supervisor at a later date.

Please note this offer is conditional upon:
(i) Your being accepted by an Oxford College;
(ii) Funding (details of this must be provided to a college which offers you a place in order to satisfy the conditions both of the college offer and of the University's offer);

Your dossier will now be forwarded to the colleges listed on your application form in your order of preference. ...

and a bunch of other stuff, blah blah blah, [signed].

DUDES OMG I AM SO JAZZED I CAN'T QUITE ACTUALLY BELIEVE IT YET. [/[livejournal.com profile] datlowen] i was just telling skip B this evening how, georgetown having said no and my reaction to that having been no stronger, really, than "oh. bummer", i wasn't sure if i'd go to oxford or edinburgh if they did accept me. but now they did, and i don't really see how i can't. (but on the other hand, it's two in the morning and i haven't really given it any amount of serious thought.)

georgetown and cambridge can go whistle. [g]

i'm so tired, but i'm so ready to do fucking handsprings in my living room, and i don't know how on earth i'm going to be able to sleep.

won the 9:00 am game by stealing two in the eighth. into the jewelry round! lost the final by collapsing like an overdone souffle. front end and vice physically exhausted, skip mentally run into the ground, missed shots, snappishness, all in all good that it was over. won a very nice silver pin, in fact prettier than the gold one. dorkiness today: nil.

won the league game by forfeit when the opponent just didn't show up. taught high school friend S to curl for a bit, then sat around and chatted while waiting for [livejournal.com profile] datlowen's game to finish. home now, with eddie izzard on the DVD.

still haven't decided anything about oxford; content to be jazzed about the concept for a short while longer. my parents are in town next weekend; maybe i'll let them happen to see the letter on my desk. :-)
