technology does not want to be my friend.

so, here's a question for the computer geeks amongst us.

my laptop has a DVD-ROM drive, unsurprisingly. also unsurprisingly, the first DVD i played in it was region 1.

as you know, i am now living in region 2. i believe i could change it to region 2 and then back to region 1, and have up to four changes over the life of the machine -- but of course what i'd really like is to be able to play either region 1 or region 2.

one option: acquire region-free external DVD drive and plug in to USB port. trouble with this: expensive!

another option: download thingummy that will break the code-thing and thus free me to play region 1 or region 2 for as long as i like, without this four-switch limit. trouble with this: would almost certainly invalidate my warranty.

i'd rather invalidate the warranty than spend a bundle of money, to be perfectly honest. but if anyone has other suggestions, i'm listening. and if anyone knows where i can download this code-breaking whozit, i'd love to hear about it.
