can i just ask this: diluted spirits? what the fucking fuck? when did this become a thing?

my mother bought this "brandy" to put in the hard sauce to put on the christmas pudding. apart from she bought it at the grocery store, where you can get beer and wine (and bailey's, by the way), but not hard liquor. so the stuff isn't really brandy -- it's diluted brandy, 42 proof, and it flames okay (we discovered when we used it in beef bourguignonne), but it tastes ... well, it tastes like water, is the thing. brandy-flavored water, but jesus, you know?

so today when we were out with the last-minute christmas shopping, my brother and i (note: do not send your adult children to do your grocery shopping if you want it done quickly, for they have not lived in your community for many years and do not know the layout of the grocery store as well as you do) tried to find real brandy -- and we found not only diluted brandy, but diluted rum, tequila, gin, and vodka. diluted vodka. i shit you not.

i would like someone to tell me what is the point of this, please.

(we finally did get genuine brandy, but we had to go two towns away to find it.)
