so there's a star wars marathon in london on May 16 -- all six films, shown in the correct order (that is, IV, V, VI, I, II, III), in a fourteen-hour marathon beginning at 7am. tickets go on sale this monday, at the box office and by phone and also online. and i'd been talking to some people and sort of idly thinking about trying to get tickets -- but then here's the thing.
it's not that £50 isn't a relatively decent price for the marathon. it's close to $100 these days, which is a lot for six movies, but the average full price of an average ticket in leicester square is £10, so £50 for six movies is a bit of a bargain. (a bit.) it's possible to keep the rest of the costs of the day down to maybe £25; the return bus fare is £9 and if in the meal breaks you go out and buy a slice of pizza and a soda from one of the eight bazillion counters in the area, no big deal. so, let's say £75, or approximately $150, for the day. it's not money i have just lying around, but it's an investment i might have considered making, because how often do you get to see the original trilogy on the big screen.
but then i realized: it's going to be the Special Editions. (and not only that, but the even-more-recently-altered blue-ghost nonsense in Return of the Jedi.) and i heard myself say to my friend:
"I'm not paying fifty pounds to see Greedo shoot first."
there was a slight pause, after which i said "okay, and that's the single geekiest thing i have ever said in my life. just so you know. you were here for it." (he agreed, and told me i'd crossed a line beyond which other geeks would beat me up and steal my lunch money.)
