crazy with the heat
Jun. 22nd, 2005 11:11 pmit's been hot lately. but oddly enough, although it's only been in the, you know, low- to mid-80's, with humidity around 60% (sometimes up to about 70, but right now just a little above 50) -- in short, a rather pleasant summer day, by DC standards -- i've been more miserable with this heat than i can ever remember being in virginia (NoVA or c'ville).
part of it, i'm sure, is the total lack of air conditioning; and i do remember the second or third morning i was in charlottesville, when i hadn't been able to buy a window AC yet and it was so hot that i was literally in tears on the phone with my parents. which i suppose just goes to show that we really do forget a lot of the badness, so that when we hit new badnesses they seem to us like the worst ever. another case in point: foot traffic. people around here walk three-abreast on sidewalks so you have to step into the street to avoid them; they get in front of you and then stop; they stand, as
datlowen has noted with annoyance elsewhere, Right In Front Of The Door. and i said to my mother, i really feel like my fellow pedestrians are more annoying here than they have been anywhere else -- but that can't possibly be, can it?, because i've lived in washington, which is as full of tourists as oxford is, and from as many places, too, so there's really no playing the card of 'but where they come from, it's okay to stand on the left'. you know? and my mother said, yeah, you're just remembering it wrong; even in cleveland, hell, even in the small town we live in outside of cleveland, it's every bit that bad. my hindsight, in short, is not 20/20; it is rose-colored.
anyway, though, it's been hot lately, and i haven't been enjoying it. and right now, i mean, there's no reason for me to feel icky and feverish when my temperature (as measured by this thermometer that lives in my pencil cup) is a cadaverous 97.0. dudes.
