random post-worlds note
Apr. 12th, 2006 10:32 pmA typical conversation at Worlds went something like this:
No. No, I don't have an accent. (Well, of course, I do, because we all do, but that's really changing the subject, isn't it? But I concede that I do not have any type of British accent, with the exception of some vocabulary tendencies I've picked up, such as ordering something "to take away" rather than "to go", which really confused the Spanish-speaking kids at the Wendy's counter until I fixed it, or saying "meant to" instead of "supposed to".) This is because I am not, and nobody has claimed I am, English. I even phrased it in the most non-committed-to-the-place manner as possible: I'm living in England now. Surely hearing that from someone with an American accent should confirm that you're speaking to an American living abroad, rather than an English person who happens to be in the United States?
At least if/when I work at English/Scottish/European events, I really will be a foreigner. :-)
some random person: So where are you from?flt: I'm up from Potomac, in Maryland, but Fox here is in from England.
random: You're from England?
me: I'm living in England now, yes. But when I curl, I curl at Potomac.
random: You don't have an accent.
me: *sigh*
