friday-ness.
Dec. 18th, 2009 07:30 pmSo now that the whole thing seems to be fixed, I will tell you a story.
Earlier this semester, I worked on a group project, part of which assignment was to write up the project in a paper. I did this, and uploaded it to the class website, in a file called classname-classnumber-section-topic-final.doc .
Then I worked on my final exam, over a period of a few days. Each time, I saved it in a file called myname-classname-final.doc .
Wait. You only think you see where this is going.
The final was due yesterday by midnight. At a quarter to eleven, I went to the class website, and under "assignments", I uploaded my final - and almost immediately realized that what I had uploaded was the paper for the group project, not the final exam. I was fooled by ...final.doc, see. Stupid of me. And "assignments" won't let me re-submit, so I have to send an e-mail to the professor (which she has said is also acceptable) saying disregard what I submitted through assignments, here is the final, sorry about me and my stupid technical difficulties.
Today at noon I get an e-mail from her, saying "Are you sure this is the right file? It only has answers to two of the four questions (and blank pages held for the others)."
OH MY GOD YOU GUYS, I sent an earlier version of the fucking file. And did I have the final version with me at work? Of course not. I e-mailed back in abject horror, saying as soon as I got home I could send along the proper one, and I hoped the combined facts that (1) I handed something in at a time before the deadline and that (2) this thing was last modified two minutes before that will be enough evidence not to knock me for being late? She said as long as I get it to her before she starts grading on Sunday it'll be fine.
I get home, and I look in the Documents folder, and the most recent thing with "...final.doc" was last modified Wednesday at 9:45 - that's the one I sent her, but where the fuck is the one I meant to send? It's nowhere in the Documents folder. I start to think about panic. Of course I saved it. Where did it go? I run a search on the whole HD for documents with "final" in their names, and I find myname-classname-final.doc last modified yesterday (!) at 22:42 (!!) ... in the Downloads folder. Where it went when I opened the copy of it I had attached to an e-mail I sent myself from work yesterday afternoon. [facepalm]
So I looked at that to make sure it was complete, so the "last opened" metadatum is this evening, but I didn't save changes (of which I had made none), so the "last modified" is still last night, and I e-mailed that, and everything's okay now. And I think I can confidently say that is a particular mistake I'm not likely to make again. :-)
