I was looking through old posts for Other Purposes, and came across this one. Note please the following:
Sigh.
what i am still complaining about is the pain in my right ear. the stiffness in my neck i was telling some of you about last night is mostly gone; there's still a little tenderness, but it's not really in the neck as much as in the hollow under the top corner of my jaw, where it is almost certainly an extension of whatever's going on with my ear. am loaded up on decongestants and analgesics, so i'm not really sure what's going on. (it no longer hurts my neck to hiccup, however, so that's a plus.)It obviously (well, it's obvious to me) went away on that occasion FIVE AND A HALF YEARS AGO, but what we learn from this stroll down memory lane is that my current apparently-TMJ issues? Are not new.neotoma: It could also be a TMJ (tempor-mandibular joint) problem, at least in part. Might ask your dentist next time you're in.
nialla42: Definitely sounds like TMJ Syndrome to me (and I've suffered with it for about 10 years now). It's not your ear causing the pain, but the jaw joint and surrounding nerves. Put "Temporomandibular joint syndrome" into Google and you'll get lots of info about it. A dentist can make a mouthguard to keep you from grinding your teeth, but if muscle pain and dislocation continue, a good chiropractor can be a *huge* help.
Sigh.
