john the baptist never had vertigo
Dec. 7th, 2010 09:36 amChange of plan: I am now singing the first verse of "Once in Royal David's City" "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree" from up under the rose window at the cathedral's west end, which is only level 2 out of 7 on the elevator?, but is really, really, really high. (And far away. But mostly high. The crossing looks very small from up there.) Chorus Master T asked me if I had issues with heights before telling me the boss had suggested this option, and I said I don't, which is true, as long as I don't have to look straight down - but you know everything is down from up there, even if you're looking forward, so it's a good thing I know the music because it means I can put my folder down and keep both hands on the railing. (He didn't ask me if I have issues with small, enclosed spaces, and I'll tell you what, between the elevator and the rose window ledge is a very narrow passageway that is thankfully quite short. Also my claustro issues have much less to do with the size of the space and much more to do with the press of other people; I can handle a little pod that's not much bigger than all to myself, for example, but I sometimes wig out on a particularly crowded metro car.)
So, yeah. I'm not precisely afraid of heights, but I do get a little uncomfortably dizzy looking down from a high place, as if the lizard brain could never really be convinced we weren't going to fall. So. Both hands on the railing it is, because the other thing all three of them said - boss director, Chorus Master T, and New Accompanist J - was that I sounded fantastic up there. :-)
Concert Saturday 12p, 4p, Sunday 4p. Ticket prices probably quite reasonable. Bring your friends! :-D
