This afternoon at the beach, I was sitting in a chair on the sand watching the prince jumping over the waves as they rolled in; Himself had just gone down to have a swim; and a little girl came up to me and said "Excuse me, I can't find my parents, do you have your phone?" I did, and I was calling the second number she gave me (she'd given me a wrong one in the first instance, but totally understandable, about six years old and separated from her family in a crowd, no shade on this kid, she did great) when her dad came along and reminded her where they were—right behind the lifeguard—and thanked me and off they went.

I always tell the prince when we're out somewhere if we get separated and he needs help finding us, often someone in a uniform might be a good bet (if we're on the metro, for example), or an adult who has kids with them. Which is exactly the advice this little girl acted on! Find a mom* and ask her to help you find your mom. *actual gender of helper is not in fact important

And then a few hours later we're on our way out to get some dinner; the prince runs ahead to the elevator and when we catch up with him he is not sure what to do about the sobbing child who is already there. She is four and a half, and she doesn't know where her mom is, and her cousin accidentally went down the elevator by himself, and she doesn't know what to do, and long story short, we bring her down to her cousin (who is only about five himself), and she stops crying but agrees the two of them can't just be off by themselves together without a grown-up, and eventually through some trial and error we get them back to their moms, who are in fact just down the hall from us with some number of other children, both older and younger.

Other people's daughters, y'all! What a day they had. Glad we could help.
