TWENTY YEARS AGO i was coming to the end of first grade and looking forward to being in second. i don't remember what i did in the summers back then.

TEN YEARS AGO i was chomping at the bit to learn to drive. i'd taken the state-mandated sixteen hours of classroom driver's ed, but couldn't begin taking the eight hours of behind-the-wheel training until my actual birthday.

THREE YEARS AGO i was wrapping up my first year at my first Real Job. i'd applied (for some reason) to drama school, for an MFA in directing, and three years ago was right about when i didn't get in to any of them. i was looking down a long tunnel of more-of-the-same. but this was before my job actually bored me to tears.

ONE YEAR AGO my job had bored me to tears, and i'd applied to grad school for a PhD in linguistics, which makes far more sense when you're me than an MFA in directing, but i still hadn't gotten in. i was in despair. i couldn't stay there, i'd go crazy, but i had no place to go. but then my friend suggested i apply here, where there's no application deadline, for an MA. in a couple of weeks it'll be a year since i heard back.

YESTERDAY i hunkered down and started writing this philosophy of language paper that's due on wednesday.

TOMORROW i hope i'll have the philosophy done, because i need to get cracking on the discourse analysis.
