fox: my left eye. "ceci n'est pas une fox." (not-fox)
Went with [livejournal.com profile] servalan this evening to see Cyrano de Bergerac at the Oxford Playhouse. I'd say the production was a notch above workmanlike -- not bad, but not going to win any awards, you know. The ensemble was fine, a couple of the lesser leads were pretty good, Cyrano and Christian were almost excellent.

And the girl playing Roxane was very good as well, don't get me wrong. It's just that I have never seen a production of this play (in French or English, on stage or screen) that hasn't made me want to wring Roxane's neck for being criminally oblivious.

there could be spoilers in here for CdB, i guess. )

(that should probably be "criminal obliviousness", but i don't like the sound of that as much)

i thought about it last night, and i think a large part of the reason i find cyrano more sympathetic than roxane is that i do the same thing he does, albeit to a lesser extent -- remember when [livejournal.com profile] esti626 told me i played it so close to the vest it was actually in my pocket?

yeah.

have fallen in love with a leather jacket i couldn't afford even if the price were in dollars rather than pounds. very sad. but i must be strong!, and tell myself there may someday be a set of circumstances in which the dollar is doing better and i have an unexpected windfall and so forth, and then it will be mine. :-D

TREAT.

my brother says: "I can't help wondering how it feels to be in a party whose ground operation is centered on keeping people from voting. Wouldn't that feel wrong, somehow?"

what he's talking about: )

republican readers are invited to respond.

[eta: responses so far:
(1) the letter is valid (i don't agree, but there's not going to be a lot of mind-changing on that one);
(2) source it (which i have done);
(3) that's conjecture (it's apparently among the plans, in the toledo area);
(4) scare tactics! bah!
with a running motif of well, there have been cases of early republican voters being intimidated, too, so it's coming from both sides.

none of which actually answers the question: in what way is this okay? i say it's not okay coming from either side, but that it's coming faster and harder from the right than from the left. is the other position that it is okay as long as everybody's doing it?]
