Wouldn't it just be easier )

I have finished the fourth inch on my sock, so I'm going to go to bed now.  [nods decisively]

Sure enough, the leasing office was disappointed but not surprised by the letter I got from Pepco yesterday.  Apparently this sort of thing happens often enough that they have a plan in place.  I'll have a phone call to make on Monday, but not a trip to the effing Pepco office.  We'll hope that works out.

Finished the Fawkes socks, finally.  Hurrah.  Toe-up socks with the leftovers from Fawkes and Bellatrix are also coming along nicely; red with purple toe and heel is past the heel and has half an inch of leg, and I'm holding off on any more of the leg because I have much less purple yarn so the length of the leg on the other sock is going to determine how long the leg on this one can be.  (It's why I did the red-foot one first, though, because once I've done the toe and the heel on the red-foot sock I could cut loose and use all the purple on the purple-foot one.)  Purple with red toe and heel is ready for the heel.

But I am pausing with those because my package from The Yarn & Fiber Company came today, so I cast on for Thuja socks for my dad, who's going for a minor surgery on Thursday.  He'll already be home when I get home for the beginning of my vacation on Friday, but I can give him handknit socks then; he will still appreciate them.  :-)  Thuja was designed with a sort of sport-weight yarn, 5.5 st/inch on size 6 needles, for a 44-stitch sock to fit men's size 9-11.  I believe my father's feet are bigger than this; also, I am using Smooshy sock yarn (in "Good Luck Jade"), which is 6.5-8 st/inch on size 1-3 needles.  So I'm using size 2 needles, where I expect to get about 8 stitches to the inch, and I cast on 80.  It, um, may not knit up as fast as the pattern would have us believe.

I've got about 3/4" of cuff done.  Onward!  (It's just that I hate doing cuffs.  Sigh.)

You know who really impresses me?  Dara Torres.  She's 41, right, and this is her fifth Olympics, not in a row.  She missed Atlanta (I believe) and Athens.  Girl has otherwise been swimming in the Olympics since Los Angeles.  Nine-tenths of the US Olympic team can't remember the LA Olympics (because in many, if not most, cases they had not yet been born).

That right there is impressive.  Next to Torres, this Phelps kid seems like not an awful lot more than a flash in the pan.  :-P

In other news, I continue not to understand why Australian teams wear green and yellow, colors that have nothing to do with their flag.  Or why New Zealand teams wear all black, likewise, although at least that looks cool.  :-)  (Orange doesn't have a thing to do with the Dutch flag, either, but I get it.)
