Who would have thought that getting a lousy five out of ten for participation in this semester's class (lowering my grade to 93%, an A-, the horror) would turn out to dredge up so much post-traumatic stuff about leaving Oxford with an MPhil because I hadn't been invited to stay for the D?

Hands?

So I was the only one surprised by it, then. Okay. :-P (With apologies to the professors reading this, I did e-mail to ask where I'd gone wrong - not because I wanted the points back, and I was careful to make that clear, but because it was important to me that in future I be more in tune with how I'm doing, and, at the same time, I think when a student asks a professor if there's something she can do to make up for missing a couple of class meetings when she's sick, and the professor gives her some extra work to do and she does it, if that's only going to get the student back to half credit, she deserves to know that, amiright? Anyway, I got two points back, which as I say I had explicitly not asked for, so I don't even feel especially guilty for grade-grubbing, but now I'm on 95%, an A, hurrah, but which was beside the actual point and I still don't know why I was docked so severely in the first place.)

Today, for the first time since - seriously, since I have no idea when, I don't have anything on my calendar after work.

Let us pause and reflect upon this miracle.

I was going to go to the movies - I still haven't seen Harry Potter, and now there's Narnia too - but I may just go home and do nothing, instead. The idea makes me kind of giddy with calm.
